Don’t choose one bad habit to fix; quietly watch all thoughts and feelings come and go without calling any of them ‘me.’

Passages where Osho speaks to this question — each links to the complete discourse.
Osho, I practice self-analysis, “introspection,” to awaken the witnessing. Is this right as a first step? Kindly explain.
That is why you see: the wife is happily sitting, listening to the radio, knitting her sweater; the moment the horn honks downstairs—husband has arrived—she lies down: “I have a headache.” Don’t think she’s faking; it really happens. I’m not saying she is deceiving—this has become her habit. The husband’s horn is enough to trigger a headache. Association has formed. Don’t think I say she’s cheating. Perhaps in the beginning she faked it; now that is long past—now it’s a habit. As the husband comes, the headache rises—because only when she has a headache does the husband put his hand on her head. Otherwise, who puts his hand on his wife’s head! Someone might put a hand on another’s wife; who puts a hand on his own! Only when the wife is troubled does the husband show a little sympathy. Love is gone; now only sympathy keeps things moving. The…
The song continues:
CUT THE ROOT OF A TREE AND THE LEAVES WILL WITHER; CUT THE ROOT OF YOUR MIND AND SAMSARA FALLS. THE LIGHT OF ANY LAMP DISPELS IN A MOMENT THE DARKNESS OF LONG KALPAS; THE STRONG LIGHT OF THE MIND IN BUT A FLASH WILL BURN THE VEIL OF IGNORANCE. WHOEVER CLINGS TO MIND SEES NOT THE TRUTH OF WHAT'S BEYOND THE MIND. WHOEVER STRIVES TO PRACTICE DHARMA FINDS NOT THE TRUTH OF BEYOND-PRACTICE. TO KNOW WHAT IS BEYOND BOTH MIND AND PRACTICE ONE SHOULD CUT CLEANLY THROUGH THE ROOT OF MIND AND STARE NAKED. ONE SHOULD THUS BREAK AWAY FROM ALL DISTINCTIONS AND REMAIN AT EASE. So in the beginning techniques are meditations; in the end you will laugh, techniques are not meditation. Meditation is a totally different quality of being, it has nothing to do with anything. But it will happen only in the end; don't think it…
Osho, to go beyond the gunas you have suggested the practice of witnessing. It seems the central element of all your teaching is witnessing. For years I have been listening to you, and perhaps I have also been practicing witnessing. But like the horizon, it seems to stay just where it is—always at a distance. Please tell me where I am going wrong.
Just this one mistake: you have turned witnessing into a doing. You think you are practicing witnessing. Witnessing appears to you as something to do. That is the mistake. Witnessing is not an act; it is the awareness toward all acts. Therefore witnessing itself is not a doing. Nothing needs to be done for witnessing. Whatever you do, simply see it. And if you make witnessing into a deed, then you will have to watch that too. Behind that you would again have to be a witness. The witness is final; there is no going behind it. So do not make witnessing a doing—let it be natural. It is a little difficult, because we turn everything into doing. We try to “practice” witnessing as well. It is like telling a man that nothing needs to be done to bring sleep. And he does not get sleep. He asks me, “That…
Osho, is watching the tendencies—observation—also a kind of repression? A form of suppression?
It depends on your inner intention whether the watching of tendencies turns into repression or not. If someone is observing—watching, inspecting, witnessing—the tendencies in order to be free of them, then that very watching will become repression, suppression. If your aspiration in observing is only this: “How can I be free of these tendencies?”—you have already decided beforehand that they are bad; you want to get rid of them; they are hell, you must be liberated from them; they are suffering, you must go beyond them. You go to look at tendencies having already taken sides; you carry condemnation and enmity toward them in your mind. Then even your watching becomes repression. And any watching that becomes repression is not watching. For observation, inspection, witnessing has only one meaning: that a dispassionate seeing can happen. So do not decide in advance that you must be free of tendencies. Do not…
Next time it happens, just watch it. Become very objective, a detached watcher, just to see what exactly it is, how it arises just like a small seed, and then how it grows and becomes a big tree and how you are completely lost in it. Just see the whole process of its growth and just see how you help it to grow. Don't be in a hurry to drop it and don't be in a hurry to get out of it; that's where people are wrong. People are in such a hurry to get out that they can't see how they get in, and that is the secret: just watch how you get in. Once you have seen the whole process and the misery that comes out of it, in that very understanding something evaporates. It is not a question of dropping -- just an old habit evaporates.
