What is the relationship between being in the moment and detaching from the ego?

To be fully present in the moment is to dissolve the ego; in that deep immersion, the witness emerges, allowing you to effortlessly slip into egolessness.

According to Osho, being in the moment and detaching from the ego are complementary, not contradictory. First, be utterly one with whatever is happening; only total identification makes total disidentification possible. In that very fullness, the witnessing consciousness arises and you "slip out," like breath in and out. Logic sees a conflict; existence shows harmony where presence ripens naturally into egoless detachment.

Give yourself completely to what you’re doing, and in that fullness a quiet watcher appears, letting you step back from your ego.

Osho, how does the cessation of this ego-sense happen? That is, witnessing is not something that is brought in, nor does one make oneself into a witness. It is only because we have become something else that the feeling of witnessing does not arise. So this ego-sense—the “made-ness” we are—how does it come to an end?

No, no—you cannot bring about its cessation. Because the very one who is asking, “How should I end it?”—that itself is the ego. You cannot end it. The ego is so subtle that when it asks, “How do I erase the ego?” it is the ego itself that is asking. The question is not coming from anywhere else. Beyond the ego there is no questioning at all; there, the ego is not. Ego belongs to the mind that asks; it is not part of the consciousness-state of being a witness. Understand it like this: there is water. The water asks, “How can I eliminate my fluidity?” Water can only be by being fluid. Beloved Osho, many times I feel so merged in you that it is as if I have died and only you are. But this feeling doesn't remain constant, and always the ego returns. This happens whenever I have to again communicate with others or return to activity. Why doesn't the ego remain dead?

If you make it a goal -- egolessness -- then you will always remain with the ego. Don't make it a goal, because all goals belong to the ego. If you think that you should remain egoless, who is this "you" who should remain egoless? This is the ego. So the first thing, don't make it a goal. Any goal will feed the ego -- even the goal of egolessness. When you are egoless enjoy it; when you feel the ego again, be alert -- but don't expect the contrary. If you start expecting you will be more entangled with the same thing. Whenever egolessness is there enjoy it, feel grateful, thank God, and when the ego comes again, be alert.
