Ask Osho!
Osho on What happens when I become aware of my own ego and its games?

What happens when I become aware of my own ego and its games?

When you become aware of your own ego and its games, the habit of judgment collapses, allowing you to live with clarity, compassion, and authenticity.

— Osho
According to Osho, when you turn awareness onto your own ego and its games, the habit of judging and projecting onto others collapses. Observing yourself is transformative: anger and other negativities lose their fuel, the ‘old games’ wither, and energy returns to presence. This inner seeing births responsibility, ease, and compassion; instead of interfering with others, you become clear, silent, and free to live authentically.

When you watch your own mind instead of judging others, your ego’s tricks fade and you feel calmer and kinder.

Beloved Osho, how can I leave my ego outside the front gate? It follows me like a shadow and even hides behind my back and then I am not able to see it.

I said, "I understand perfectly well. You don't understand with whom you are talking." But I did not leave the chair. I told him that whatever he wants to do, he can do. He can go to the vice-chancellor, he can bring the vice-chancellor... "I am going to remain in this chair." He said, "What is the purpose of all this mess?" I said, "The purpose is to show you that it is not my sitting in the chair that is hurting you, it is your ego. If you accept it I will leave the chair. If you don't accept, then you can bring anybody to help you... but as far as I know the students, nobody is going to help." He waited a minute. There was utter silence in the class. Everybody was afraid that if the vice-chancellor came and the proctor came, there was going to be trouble…

During one of your lectures we learned that if we try to leave our ego just by trying to be humble for example, then the ego comes through humility. We also learned that the only way to get rid of the ego is meditation. But doesn't the ego come through that also? I ask this because I've seen live examples in the ashram.

LET me answer you through an anecdote: "A psychologist was giving a young man some personality tests. He drew a vertical line and asked, 'What does this make you think of?' 'Sex,' said the young man. Next the psychologist drew a circle. 'and what does this make you think of?' 'Sex,' said the young man again. The psychologist drew a star. 'and this?' he asked. 'Why, sex of course,' the young man said. The psychologist put down his pencil. 'In my opinion,' he said, 'you have an obsession about sex.' 'I have an obsession!' protested the young man. 'for goodness' sake, who's been drawing all those off-colour pictures?'" If you are obsessed with the ego, wherever you go you will find live examples of it, and you will think others are being egoistic -- it is your projection. Once you become humble, the whole world becomes humble. Suddenly, the ego…

Osho, do I have to forget myself to lose my ego?

Eva, IT IS NOT A QUESTION OF FORGETTING YOURSELF -- on the contrary, it is a question of remembering yourself. What is the ego? Ego exists because you have forgotten yourself, because you don't remember who you are. And it is very difficult to live without SOME idea of who you are. Not knowing the reality of your being, you have to create a false substitute. What is the ego? Ego is the false substitute that you have created for the self. It is not your self, but it is very difficult to live without a self -- it will be almost impossible to live without a self some kind of self is needed, is a must; otherwise, how will you keep yourself together? You will start falling apart. Even if the center is false, it helps you. Even a false center keeps you at least somehow together. You have forgotten…

Osho, into what should the power of the ego be transformed?

So those three experiments I have spoken of for the purification of life—purification of the body, of thought, and of feeling—if these three experiments continue, in doing them you will find the ego has dissolved. Anger will not dissolve in that sense; ego will dissolve. The energy of anger will continue in new forms. No “energy of ego” will remain. When ego dissolves, nothing is left behind—no residue. Anger or sex do not dissolve in that sense; they are transformed. They remain present in other forms. The energy of anger remains; it functions in another way. It may become compassion, but the energy is the same. And in this world, those who are very angry—if their energy is transformed—they can be filled with just that much compassion, because the energy takes a new form. Energy is not destroyed; it takes new forms. As I said, those who are very sexual…

Osho, whenever someone tells you that such-and-such is happening in meditation and you say, “Good, that is auspicious,” the ego grows even more. And at all other times the ego keeps raising its head. Even while writing this question the ego thought a lot about it, and still...?

And I tell you: only the shadow remains with you; you have lost the soul. Imagine what your plight must be! Losing a shadow caused such trouble; you have lost the soul and kept only the shadow. But perhaps you don’t notice much trouble because those among whom you live have also lost their souls. The truth is, if you gain your soul, the trouble begins—those without souls become your enemies. Otherwise, why would people stone Mahavira, insult Buddha, crucify Mansoor, poison Socrates, kill Jesus? The crowd is without soul. Whenever a soul-full person stands among them, they become very uneasy. What foolishness! They should learn from the soulful how to become soulful. But seeing a soulful person, they get anxious. They say, “His presence proves we failed to become what we should have become. We lost.” Anxiety arises: “Our life is wasted. Remove this man; his presence is a…
