Osho, I see neither truth nor beauty. I have no inkling of the Lord either. I can neither understand nor digest what you say. What should I do?
No—God is beauty. Raso vai sah—he is essence, he is savor. He is the supreme beauty. The beauty that is hidden in the flower, in the moon, in someone’s eyes, in a child’s smile, in the birds’ chirping—that entire beauty is he. It is not the product of your thought-process. That is why, even more than “truth,” the word that reveals God is “beauty.” I agree with Rabindranath. He did not use the word “truth”; he called the divine “the Beautiful.” We have two priceless sutras. One is “Sachchidananda”—he is sat (being), chit (consciousness), ananda (bliss). The other is “Satyam Shivam Sundaram”—he is truth, auspiciousness, beauty. In these two sutras the whole search of India is contained. The second is even more valuable than the first. The first is a philosopher’s language; the second is a poet’s. And the poet’s language is the language of the heart. The poet is…Read the full discourse →
Osho, We were never really convinced about God; seeing you, God came to mind.
Satan said, “That was the welcome—that’s for tourists who come for a lark, to look around. This is reality. That time you dropped in by chance, in a dream. That was enticement—the reception hall is built for guests. This is the real hell.” Even in hell there is dough; behind it the hook is hidden. Life’s experience says: truth is ugly; dreams are beautiful. Psychologists say man dreams for this very reason—truth is ugly. If he didn’t dream, what would he do? How would he live? Life is so ugly that he keeps himself distracted with dreams. Because life is so ugly, man writes poetry and paints pictures. He distracts himself somehow—builds beautiful houses, hangs beautiful paintings, creates music, composes verse. These are all ways to make the bitter reality of the world a little sweet—or at least to sugarcoat it, the way we sugarcoat a poisonous, bitter pill. That…Read the full discourse →
Osho, what is the definition of God?
Words are very small. If you say God is light, then what of darkness? The scriptures have said that God is light. Suppose we accept this as a definition—then what about darkness? Where will darkness go? Darkness is too; in fact it is far more than light. Light sometimes is and sometimes is not; darkness is always, eternal. Where will you place darkness? If you say God is light, darkness is left out. If you say God is darkness, then light is left out. If you say God is both darkness and light, a contradiction arises: they cannot be together. Try to have both darkness and light in the same room. If you bring in light, darkness disappears; if you preserve darkness, you cannot have light. Then how can both be together? That becomes an impossibility. So you cannot say “both” either. Then the fourth device is to say: it…Read the full discourse →
Osho, God does not appear to me anywhere. What should I do?
Anand! Open your eyes. You are trying to see with your eyes shut, trying to hear with your ears closed, with the doors of the heart barred—then it is impossible to see God. When the eye is open, there is light. The very opening of the eye is light. Keep the eye closed and even if not one but a thousand suns were to rise, there will still be darkness, a moonless night. But this is not only your mistake; it is almost everyone’s. When God does not appear, people conclude: perhaps there is no God—hence He is not seen. Rarely does someone wonder: perhaps my eyes are closed—hence I do not see. Those rare ones, sooner or later, become able to see the Divine. So the first and the last sutra is this: drop the search for God; learn the alchemy of opening your eyes. Eyes open in two…Read the full discourse →
