Because the ego is cunning and self-deception easy, action must also accord with scripture—the distilled insight of the enlightened—which functions as a touchstone. Alignment with shastra tests and tempers one’s claim of egolessness, preventing the mind’s tricks and ensuring purity of action.
Not wanting rewards isn’t enough; check your actions against wise teachings so you don’t fool yourself.
