Osho's perspective on Insight
When Osho Spoke About Insight
Passages from the discourses where this theme comes alive.
It seems, when the hits come through our work, it is not a hammering on the rock but a simple knocking on the door. Would you comment?
IT'S TRUE. The Master only knocks on your door, but if you are too much identified with your sleep the knock on the door hurts you. It feels as if you are knocked by a hammer on the head. When you want to sleep and somebody tries to wake you up, he looks like an enemy. Otherwise, the function of the Master is to wake you up. It depends on your sleep how many and how loud the knocks you will need. Sometimes he even has to knock exactly on your head because you don't listen to the knocks on the door. He has to throw a bucket of cold water on you! Mulla Nasruddin was saying to his wife, "What makes you think, dear, that I am a loafer?" The wife said, "Because when opportunity knocks you complain about the noise!" The Master knocks because there is an opportunity.…
Osho, in a letter you wrote: Do not remain in indecision; do not look back. The temple doors are wide open. After thousands of years such an opportunity descends upon the earth. And know that these doors will not remain open forever. It can be missed easily. Therefore I keep calling: come and enter! I stand at the door, knocking and knocking. And I knock because in some other birth and another age I had given a promise.
At night a chariot arrived. The sound of wheels at the door. In his sleep the head priest felt, He has come. He said, Listen, does anyone hear a chariot? The other priests said, Stop this nonsense. All day you plagued us; will you not stop now? Your head has gone bad. No chariot is coming; it is thunder. They went to sleep. Then someone alighted from the chariot, climbed the steps, knocked at the door. One of the priests muttered in his sleep, Seems someone is knocking. The suspicion was there, the mind wavered—perhaps the dream was true! The chief priest said, This is the limit! It isn’t only I who am entangled in dreams—you are too. It’s just a gust of wind rattling the door. Who will knock at midnight? And is God a thief, to come at midnight? God comes in broad daylight, under the sun. Now…
Osho, whenever someone experiences the Vast, it inevitably expresses itself in some form. Is it not so with the enlightened ones?
The experience is such that, try to hide it and it will not hide; it will manifest. As far as the experiencer is concerned, it will certainly be expressed. But as far as you are concerned, it depends on you: it may be revealed, or it may remain unrevealed. Buddha has said what he came to know—whether you heard it or not… On Buddha’s side, it has been expressed; on your side, it may or may not be revealed. The rain falls: lakes, ponds, pits and hollows fill; the mountains stay empty. If your pitcher is kept upside down, no matter how much the clouds thunder and pour, you will remain empty; for you, the rain will not have happened. Not that there was no rain—there was; only, not for you. And until it is for you, what difference does it make whether it happened or not? Even if the…
Question: BELOVED OSHO, YOU HAVE WRITTEN IN A LETTER: "DO NOT BE IN CONFUSION, DO NOT LOOK BACK. THE DOORS OF THE TEMPLE ARE OPEN WIDE! ONLY AFTER THOUSANDS OF YEARS DOES SUCH AN OPPORTUNITY DESCEND ON THE EARTH, AND KNOW WELL THAT THE DOORS OF THE TEMPLE ARE NOT GOING TO STAY OPEN FOREVER. THE OPPORTUNITY CAN EASILY BE MISSED. THIS IS WHY I AM CALLING YOU OVER AND OVER AGAIN: COME AND ENTER. I AM KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR AGAIN AND AGAIN. AND I KNOCK BECAUSE IN SOME OTHER LIFE, IN SOME OTHER AGE, I HAD GIVEN THE PROMISE!" PLEASE KINDLY MAKE THE MEANING OF YOUR MYSTERIOUS DECLARATION CLEAR TO US. ALSO PLEASE TELL US WHY SUCH AN OPPORTUNITY ARISES ONLY AFTER THOUSANDS OF YEARS, AND WHY IT COMES WITH THE COMING OF A BUDDHA AND GOES AWAY WITH HIS GOING.
"When you touch the existential source of your being, insight flowers effortlessly, overflowing like a raincloud, and sharing becomes a natural expression of existence itself."
"Your misery is born from the roles you play; a shock is needed to make the mask slip, allowing you to return to your true self."
"When insights knock gently at your door, it is the compassionate call of existence inviting you to awaken; respond with love, and you will find yourself face-to-face with the divine."
"Awakening can happen in the most ordinary moments; when the mind is relaxed and unoccupied, even the mundane becomes a doorway to the divine."
