Feel your pain and losses completely instead of avoiding them, and natural detachment will grow on its own.

Osho, yesterday you said that jealousy is included in respect. I have immense respect for you, but the jealousy inherent in it keeps poisoning it, and I feel guilt and pain. Does reverence transcend this poison-laced respect?
It needs a little explaining—it's a delicate point. Whenever you respect someone, you do so because you see in that person something you do not have. You respect because you glimpse in the other something you would also like to possess. A beggar respects an emperor because he, too, longs to be an emperor. So on the one hand he respects, and inside he also envies. Because he is not yet an emperor but wants to be. You have attained what he wants to attain. He respects you as skillful, successful: “I stand far back in the line; you have gone ahead to where I should have been.” So you are powerful, clever, intelligent, strong—he respects you. But inside a fire of jealousy also burns—if he gets the chance, he would like to be in your place and push you aside. And if the beggar gets that chance, he will…
Every time, failure. Happiness was never found. It proved delusion every time. Wherever desire showed the path, there futility was found; there sorrow was found. After walking thousands of desire-paths and arriving at the same experience without exception, dispassion is born. Dispassion is the continuous experience of the failure of desire, its essence and distillate. Then it is not at all difficult to cut ego, mine-ness, and desire. The realization of dispassion means: wherever desire says happiness is, there happiness is not. Wherever desire says happiness is, there suffering is. And wherever desire says suffering is, there happiness may be. Desire deceives—the great deceiver. This realization is called dispassion. Then seeking in pleasure stops and seeking in pain begins. We call the search in pain tapas—austerity. Tapas means: now I do not search in pleasure. I searched in pleasure and did not find; now I will search in pain.
The distances, the differences, are secondary; the fundamental is present in every man. And as the nature of one man behaves, so do all men behave. The differences in them are in the details, in the extensions—some river’s water a little blue, some a bit muddy, some a little green, some a little clear—differences in the details. These make no difference to water boiling at a hundred degrees. One woman’s nose is a little long, another’s a little short; one woman a little fair, another a little dark—it makes no difference. One woman is born in a Hindu home, another in a Muslim home—that too makes no difference. Her fundamental condition—womanliness—is just as it is for all the water of the world. One drop gives the news; but we, after lifetimes of many drops, still do not arrive at the conclusion—because all the world’s water keeps remaining.
Beloved Osho, yesterday you discussed how to be without passion, how to go beyond passion. Please tell us the alchemy of being without passion, sex, even in dreams.
Try to understand this deep rule about the mind. The mind is like the root of the tree. If the roots are deep down in the earth then the tree goes on flourishing; new leaves, flowers and fruits go on sprouting. But if the roots are pulled out of that dark depth and put in the light then the tree dies. This is exactly what happens with the mind. Whatever may be the disease of the mind, bring it out in the light. Light is death for disease. But you do just the opposite. Your so-called religious gurus have been telling you just the opposite. They have been saying that you should suppress it so much that even the root cannot be seen. But the deeper the root, the more dangerous it is. Then your life will become poisonous. You should uncover yourself and bring it before your eyes. Do…
We are afraid. We do not open our eyes to see what is what—because we fear that what we are seeing may not be there. We hide our wounds; if we expose and look, we will see the wounds. We hide the wound, and wear a golden bracelet on top. The bracelet shows; the wound is concealed. Seeing the bracelet, we think all is well. But does a bracelet heal a wound? The wound goes on festering within; it becomes a sore. Our whole life is self-deception—where there is nothing at all. Even we feel there is nothing; yet we are afraid, “We are living by this—if we open our eyes and see there is nothing, how will we live?” This trouble has arisen in the West. Understand it. In the last three hundred years the West has tried to see things as they are.
