Ask Osho!
Osho on Are murder, rape, and theft only wrong when done without awareness?

Are murder, rape, and theft only wrong when done without awareness?

The only sin is unawareness; in true awareness, actions arise from the whole, rendering violence and wrongdoing impossible.

— Osho
According to Osho, the only sin is unawareness; authentic virtue is awareness. In real awareness, murder, rape, theft, or violence are impossible, so the question of their morality doesn’t arise. Unconscious actions—including so‑called virtues—breed ego and hypocrisy. Awareness functions like a lighted house: when you are alert, action arises from the whole, not the egoic doer, and naturally fits the moment without harm or regret.

When your inner light is on, you can’t harm or steal; when it’s off, even ‘good’ deeds go wrong—so keep awake inside.

Osho, today you spoke of awareness and consciousness and it seemed as though this was all that was needed to guide one s actions. Does this mean then that murder, rape and theft are only wrong in so far as they are done without awareness, without consciousness?

A young farm boy from Arkansas was sent to New York by his father to learn the undertaking business under the tutelage of the great Frank E. Campbell. Some months later, the father visited his son in the big city. "Tell me," he said, "have you learnt much?" "Oh sure, Dad," said the son. "I have learnt a lot. And it has been very interesting." "What was the most interesting thing you learnt?" The son thought for a moment and then said, "Well, we did have one wild experience that taught me a lesson." "What was that?" "Well," said the son, "one day we got this phone call from the Taft Hotel. It seems that the housekeeper had checked one of the rooms and she discovered that a man and woman had died in their sleep on the bed and completely naked." "Wow!" said the father. "What did Mr. Campbell…

In the same context I ask, Osho, what is sin and what is virtue?

If the inner lamp of awareness is lit, then whatever actions happen are virtue. If the inner lamp is extinguished, then whatever actions happen are sin. Understand this! No act in itself is sin or virtue. Sin and virtue depend on the doer. No act is intrinsically sin or virtue. Generally we believe that acts are good or bad—this act is bad, that act is good. That is not the case. A person whose inner lamp is out cannot truly do a good act—it is impossible. It may look as if he is doing good. He can imitate the actions of those whose lamps are lit. But even in imitation his motive will be contrary. If he builds a temple, it won’t be for the Divine; it will be for his own name or his father’s—he will get the name inscribed. If he gives charity, he will be anxious whether…

Osho, please say something about this news item: the indian express of 18th august reports that the rajneesh film won't reflect the real image of india. The union information minister, l.k. Advani said in the parliament, 'foreign television and film units have been refused permission to document the activities of the rajneesh ashram, as it is felt that a film on the activities of the ashram would not reflect favourably on india's image abroad.'

If this country is going to be destroyed one day, the reason will be these people who are in power today. India cannot have one language. And if it can have one language, that language has to be neutral; either it will be English or Esperanto, but not Hindi, not Gujarati, not Marathi, not Bengali, not Tamil. It will have to be a neutral language. English is neutral; it is nobody's mother tongue in India. And English is international too, so it is perfectly good. I support a two-language formula: English as the national language, because it is also international and as the second language, the mother tongue. Each child should be taught two languages. Forget all about Hindi, and forget all about creating one monolith in this country of variety, of multiplicity. And they are trying to do the same thing with religion too, in the same way. They…

A friend has asked: Osho, what is the difference between sin and virtue? And as long as the mind is filled with sin, how can there be faith, devotion, feeling? How will prayer happen while the mind is full of sin? So first let the mind be filled with virtue; then prayer will happen!

It sounds right. It seems reasonable. Yet it is not right—and it is full of unawareness. It sounds right to say, “As long as the mind is full of sin, how can there be prayer!” But that is like a physician saying, “As long as you are sick, how can I give you medicine! First get well and healthy, and then take the medicine.” But once you are well, why would you need medicine? If you decide to pray only after you’ve dropped all sin, you will never get the chance to pray. As long as there is sin, you won’t pray. And when there is no sin left, why pray? What would be the meaning of prayer then? Prayer is the medicine. Therefore, one has to pray while still a sinner. And another thing: how will sin go? It cannot go without prayer. Those who try to remove sin…

Beloved Osho, you say that there is only one sin, and that is unawareness. I tried for years to look for the good in every situation, however painful it seemed, but I still have not come to understand how there is no wrong. To me, things like the abuse of a child -- either physically or psychologically -- and the rape of a woman are wrong. How can they be called good? Can you tell me anything to help my understanding of these things?

And any problems like this -- boys asking to make love to their mother -- can be explained to them, that they are not yet ripe. One day they will be ripe; for that day we are preparing them. And children are very receptive, very understanding. There is sexual abuse of children because they are kept in darkness by their parents, by their teachers. Love is something like a sin which has to be done in darkness, and nobody is to know about it. You are doing something ugly. In your own mind it is something ugly, something that should not be done. You are not rejoicing in it. Rejoice! Make love a festive moment. And of course, your children have to take part in it. They can at least dance around you while you are making love, sing beautiful songs around you, play on their small guitars, drums. They…
