From the Discourses
Passages where Osho speaks to this question — each links to the complete discourse.
Osho, the resolve to carry your message to every home is growing dense on its own. Society will raise a thousand obstacles—it already is. Life too may be endangered. What should I do?
Neeraj, life is already in crisis; death will come anyway. So what more can happen now that would put life in crisis? What accident could be greater than death? What can people really spoil? Everything is going to be taken away as it is. Then why panic? Why worry? Where everything is destined to be looted, sell your horses and sleep—drop the worry! What will people do? What can they take away? And the obstacles people create—if there is understanding in you, every obstacle will become your practice. People will put up barriers; if you have a little understanding, each barrier will turn into a step. Let people create hurdles; from them your inner being will grow dense, strong, concentrated. Do not be afraid. If the resolve itself is arising, what can you do now? The message will have to be shared! This is beyond your personal will. If the…
Osho, I want to carry your message from home to home, from heart to heart, but people are completely deaf and blind. What should I do? Having found what I have found, it is not possible not to share it. There is an inevitability to sharing it.
You who hurl a challenge to humanity all eight watches of the day, You who take palaces and treasures as your hereditary right— Tomorrow you will become dust-motes, kicked under people’s feet. Who here is there that has tasted the nectar of immortality? These rainbow dawns are borne on nights black with sorrow; In summer’s scorching flames there are showers of sweetness! This making and unmaking is the tread of deathless Time’s feet; These talk of joys and sorrows are like pictures of shadows here. To stop is not the law of motion—keep on walking, brother; To be extinguished is not the law of life—keep on burning, brother! Like a block of snow—pure, cool, bright—be the heir of glory; It is not the law for tears to freeze—keep on melting, brother! Keep flowing on, flowing on, flowing on, brother! Keep your head held high and bear the cold and heat,…
Osho, I want to carry your message to people, but my capacity is very small. I also fear people’s opposition. Any command for me?
God said, “Without hail, substance does not arise. Challenge is needed. You asked only for the pleasant—the sweet. Salt is needed too. You asked only for happiness; sorrow is needed too. Pain refines. You asked for abundant water, for sun—good. But you gave the plants no chance to struggle. Without struggle their roots did not become strong. They rose high above, but below they are weak. Pull a few up and see!” He looked: the roots were tiny. They had drawn no strength from the earth. When plants must endure storm, take risks, their roots go deep. You have seen—and you will be surprised to know—if the wind always blows from one direction, say from the left and bends the tree to the right, then on the left side the tree’s roots become stronger. Because on that side it has to grip the ground hard—or it will fall. The roots…
Beloved Osho, I am remembering the story you told the other day about the archer. Can you tell us more about how to have this attitude when spreading your words in a world of negativity and opposition towards you? Is there a fightless fight?
I am simply trying to make the causes clear to people: "You go on clinging to the causes, and you don't want the effects. You go on sowing seeds of a certain flower, but you don't like the flower so you destroy it -- but you don't stop sowing the seeds. This becomes your confusion, your conflict, your misery." The fight that you have to learn is not out of hate, it is out of love. It is not out of any revenge, it is out of understanding. It is not for your own gain, it is for the gain of those with whom you are fighting. Then it becomes a fightless fight. Then whether you succeed or fail does not matter; what matters is that you did your best. That brings contentment to you -- that whatever you could do you have done, and you have never been holding…
Question: Final question: Osho, your message? Roshanlal! Spread light; that is my message. Become luminous yourself, and illumine others! Light your own lamp; share your flame with the lamps that have gone out! Spread the living— one single word is more than enough to be meaningful. That living word will not only quicken you, it will pour life around you; it will turn the withered whole environment green again. That word is “love.” Go within, deeper than your own depth; then bring up the pearl of this living word, and open the lip-sealed shell— the pearl of “love” will emerge, whose radiance is greater than the sun. No doubt your own idea of yourself as someone great becomes an obstacle to receiving and spreading this living word.
