Osho on How to be aware during anger?

How to be aware during anger?

In the moment of anger, become the spectator; watch it pass without involvement, and you will find its magnitude diminishes. Awareness is the key that transforms the storm into stillness.

— Osho
According to Osho, anger is small; the ego exaggerates it. In the very moment of anger, simply wait and watch like a spectator, neither suppressing nor acting it out. Do nothing for or against; keep patience and don’t ‘ride’ it. See it pass across your inner screen, and its magnitude shrinks naturally. Awareness is non-involvement—the clarity that you are the watcher, not the anger.

When you feel angry, quietly watch it inside without doing anything, and it will fade by itself.

Anger comes in a second—then how can we suppress it in a second?

No, no—I am not talking about suppression. I am not saying suppression. (The audio recording of the question is not clear.) Find solitude—close the door somewhere, sit quietly—and watch whatever arises. Just watch; do not do anything. It will arise for a moment—watch exactly that. No worry. You are mistaken in thinking anger arises for only a moment; its surge lingers for a long time. The flare-up may be a moment, but its trailing line of smoke can go on and on. No worry if you cannot see it in its full youth; even if it appears in its old age, there is no harm. Even if only its final streak is visible, there is no harm. Begin the experiment of seeing. As the practice of seeing grows dense, one day it will be caught right at its birth. For now, it will be like this—that you will see its…

My beloved master, thank you for your immense love and compassion for me! Osho, how to be aware, especially during anger? This feeling is so strong it comes always like thousands of wild horses running. I am really tired of it! Can you help me, again?

Prem Ila, you have the simplest problem -- you are making too much out of it. "Like thousands of wild horses running" -- that much anger would have burned you! From where do you bring thousands of wild horses? I have heard that Mulla Nasruddin was having an interview to be employed on a ship, and there were three officials interviewing. One officer said, "A great cyclone, tidal waves, and the ship is almost sinking... what will you do?" Mulla said, "No problem. I will do what is technically right -- I will stop the ship and lower down a heavy support." The other officer said, "But another tidal wave is coming, and the ship is just going to sink. What are you going to do?" Mulla said, "The same -- I will lower down another heavy support; every ship carries them." The third officer said, "But another tidal wave..."…

Osho, I am ignorant. All around me there is nothing but darkness. What is the path for me?

Music! Darkness is only proof that light can be. Darkness is only evidence that light is possible. So do not look at darkness with a negative outlook. Do not look with the eyes of an atheist; look with the eyes of a theist. Then even in darkness you will sense light hidden within it. Darkness is the womb of light. Do not be alarmed by darkness, nor afraid, nor anxious—be blissful, for the morning must be coming! And the denser the darkness, the nearer the dawn. Deep is this darkness; by the veils of selfishness we have been plundered. A wall of dead matter stands encircling, people speak as if turning their faces away; in this sky there is no sun, no moon, no star. An infinite ocean of imagination this, roaring as it girds the body, fierce— nothing is understood; where is the dusky shore? Beloved, give me that…

By the time I see my moods, I am knee-deep in them. Then it is not so much a question of watching, but of riding on the wave until it subsides.

And that;s the meaning of the historical fact that in India the twenty-four teerthankaras of the Jains, Buddha, Ram, Krishna -- they all were kshatriyas, warriors. All the Hindu avataras except one man, Parashuram, were kshatriyas, warriors: angry people, violent. The twenty-four teerthankaras of the Jains -- all kshatriyas. Not a single brahmin. Buddha himself was a kshatriya. In India, the whole history indicates something. Why has it happened to kshatriyas? -- that they became the greatest openings of compassion in the world? -- they had anger, they were fighters. They could have been violent. Once the energy is released and awareness arises, the awareness rides on the energy and uses it. Only one brahmin, Parashuram, was one of the avataras. But he was not a brahmin at all. It is said that you could not find a more violent man in the whole history of the world. He was…

Beloved Osho, for the last four days I have been taking part in the zazen group. When anger arises, it is so difficult for me to watch this feeling instead of throwing this anger on others. Beloved master, would you please speak about the art of watching?

Anand Urmila, everything that I have been saying to you consists of the art of watching -- from different dimensions, from different aspects, from different angles. My whole teaching can be reduced to a single word -- watching. That is the only thing in you which is not part of the mind. That is the only thing in you which does not belong to you, but belongs to existence itself. For example, I can watch my hand; that means I am not the hand. Whatever you can watch you are not. This is a simple arithmetic. The watcher is bound to be separate from the object that he is watching. You can watch your body from outside, and from inside too. You can close your eyes and you can watch your body from the inside. It will be dark, and it will not be so visible and so clear, but…
