Manifestation

Question: bhagwan sri, why has this silent manifestation of the unknown been given different basic names like, heaven, earth, matter and consciousness? Why has the manifestation of the absolute not been given?

Osho, why has this silent experience of the Nameless been given dualistic names like Heaven and Earth, or consciousness and matter? Why has nonduality not been expressed?

Expression can only be of duality; nonduality remains inexpressible. So, at the most, in speaking, what can be done is two—in speech. The nearest to truth that speech can come is two—in speech. Outside speaking, only one remains. But language cannot say anything without breaking it into two. If Lao Tzu is speaking, writing, he is committing the minimum mistake possible. Nothing more accurate can be done with words. And even if we want to deny this, we will still have to use words. Then we say “nondual”—not two. Yet to say “not two” we still use the two. Even to say “not,” one has to say it. The two will follow us. As long as we make the effort to speak, the two will follow us. Leave speaking, and the one remains. I am able to do it. And I am also able not to do it -- because I feel the absurdity of it. And the second ability is better. Buddha could not be persuaded to do it, but Jesus had to do it. Again, the reason is the same: because the Jews could not believe anything unless it was something material. They could not be convinced without a miracle. In India one can conceive of a Buddha who does not perform any miracles. But the Jews began to ask, "Can you do miracles? Only if you do miracles can we believe that what you are saying is meaningful." It was not Jesus who wanted to do the miracles, it was the Jews who compelled him. Yes—about its manifestation, we will speak later. It is simply a matter of knowing—like a mirror. What does a mirror mean? It has the capacity to mirror. It is not necessary that, at this very moment, some image is forming in it, some person’s face is appearing; it may be lying empty. But whoever’s face comes before it can be known.
