Osho, I am dissatisfied with everything. What should I attain so that I may find contentment?
As long as you think in the language of getting, you will not find contentment. It is the very language of getting that creates discontent. As long as you keep asking, “What should I get?” you will remain dissatisfied. Contentment is in celebrating what is. Discontent is in the desire to obtain what is not, in craving. And there is so much that you do not have. If you set out to get what is not, you will keep on going and going; you will never get it all. You will never be content. Discontent will remain the tale and the torment of your life. No; what is, is not little. You have been given life—have you offered thanks to the Divine for this life? And if you had to go purchase this life, how high a price would you not be ready to pay? These eyes were given, these…
I am discontented with everything. What can I get so I can attain contentment?
As long as you think in terms of the language of getting you will not find contentment. Discontent arises from the very language of getting. As long as you say, what can I get, you will remain discontented. Contentment is in celebrating the festival of what is. Discontentment is in the desire, in the thirst to get what is not. And there is much that you do not have. If you go off to get it you will continue going, continue going, you will never be able to get it all. You will never become contented. Your life's story will continue in discontented anguish. No, what is, is not lacking. You have received life. Have you given thanks to god for this life? And if you had to go buy this life then what price might you be ready to pay! He gave these eyes, he gave these burning lamps.…
Satisfaction is a poor man's effort to keep his face smiling, somehow. Contentment is the joy of inner richness. It is the aura that surrounds a meditative person. It is the fragrance that naturally comes to those who go beyond mind. Satisfaction is of the mind, contentment is of no-mind. And that's what meditation is all about: a shift of your consciousness from thought to no-thought, from constant chattering to an inner silence. And unless one knows contentment one is not really alive. One is somehow dragging, somehow keeping oneself together. But the moment you experience contentment you need not keep yourself from falling apart. You become integrated, you become crystallized. You are not only a union, you become a unity; you are one. And that oneness is the goal of sannyas. Knowledge can be acquired in two ways. Either you acquire knowledge from others... Then it is superficial.
Question: First question: Osho, isn’t it right to live with contentment? In the first contentment there is suppression of longing; in the second there is the dissolution of longing. The second does not come by practice; it comes by understanding. The first comes by practice. The first turns a man into a “holy” man; the second turns him into an awakened one. Avoid becoming a pious ascetic; don’t stop short of being a buddha—that is your ultimate potential. Contentment should come like the shadow of truth. Be wary of patching yourself up, dusting off your clothes after a beating, and somehow persuading yourself—such impotent, flabby contentment! It is this limp contentment that has poisoned the life‑breath of this country. It is this limp contentment that has bound the so‑called religious of the whole world in a hollow religion.
the cowardly is always complaining to complain, intelligence is not needed to complain, courage is not needed to complain is a very mediocre activity anybody can do it hence everybody is doing it but to be contented, to feel grateful, to feel blessed great intelligence is required courage is required, insight is required and the moment you start looking into the depths of life a great surprise arises you cannot believe it, it is incredible what has been given is simply beyond our comprehension and we have not earned it either it is a sheer gift from the whole to see life, love, freedom, joy as gifts from the divine makes one feel contented and the atmosphere of inner contentment is the atmosphere of a real temple temples don't exist on the outside one has to become a temple and the only way to become a temple is to create…
