What is the significance of darkness in our experience?

Embrace the darkness, for in its silence and stillness lies the gateway to meditation, where the division of the self dissolves and an eternal light emerges.

— Osho
According to Osho, darkness is the felt split of the ego—the looker and the looked-upon—and the first gate of meditation. Instead of fleeing or seeking light, relax into this silence, stillness, and infinity. By lovingly accepting darkness (tathata), the division dissolves; then a fuel-less, eternal light arises that includes and transcends both darkness and outer light.

If you stop fighting your inner darkness and simply be with it, the fear and split fade, and a deeper, natural light appears by itself.
