Their true role is not spiritual authority but skilled, nonauthoritative helpers—mechanics of the mind—who assist with problems without becoming father figures. Both therapists and clients must consciously refuse authority projections, relating instead as friends. In his communes, therapy never replaces priesthood or spiritual guidance.
Psychologists should help fix mind-problems like a good mechanic, not act like a bossy priest or guru.
