Osho on Is it possible to feel both invisible and rooted in the earth?

Is it possible to feel both invisible and rooted in the earth?

In the stillness of non-doing, the ego dissolves, and in that emptiness, the true rootedness of your being emerges. Embrace the darkness, for it is the gateway to your deepest ground.

— Osho
According to Osho, yes—it’s not only possible but essential: invisibility belongs to the dissolving ego, while rootedness belongs to your true being. When you stop doing, the ego evaporates and you may feel blank or afraid—the ‘dark night’ gap. If you allow and accept this non-doing without clinging, the deeper groundedness of being reveals itself; both movements unfold together.

When your busy ‘me’ melts away you may feel like nothing, but if you trust that emptiness, your real self shows up steady and rooted.

If I don't do anything I find that I start feeling invisible instead of feeling rooted in the earth. Is it possible to be both?

Yes, it is not only possible, it is absolutely necessary; whenever it is happening it will happen in both these ways, they will happen together. When you are not doing anything the ego feels uprooted because the ego is the doer. The more you do, the better the ego feels; it feels rooted, feels on the earth, has a foothold. When you are not doing anything the ego is invisible, it loses its force -- and you are identified with the ego so you feel you are becoming invisible, you are becoming vaporous, evaporating, you are losing solidness. This is one part. The other part: you will soon become aware that if you allow this invisibleness to happen, this evaporation to happen, and you don't fall again on the ego and start doing something, then you will see that you are rooted. That rootedness is of the being. And the…

Beloved Osho, when I see you, sometimes I see a twinkle of childlike innocence, a warmth that I call love. And sometimes I see a vast emptiness, as cool and crystal-clear and impersonal as the night sky. Are both these qualities in you? Are both these qualities in me? It seems impossible but true.

Sarito, you have stumbled on a very significant truth. The childlike innocence and the warmth of love that you see are not contradictory to "a vast emptiness as cool and crystal-clear and impersonal as the night sky." In fact, they are both sides of the same coin. If you become childlike, innocent, there will be a warmth and love in you. But on the other side of the coin, you will be just like the cool, impersonal nothingness, just like a starry night. Both these things happen together. The first happens -- the coolness, the nothingness -- and then the innocence of the child brings the warmth. But it is always difficult for the intellect to figure out when it sees something which appears to be opposite. For example, if you dig up the roots of a rosebush, you cannot conceive that these roots are connected with the roseflowers. The…
I would add—psychologists do not, for it lies beyond their scope—that the great Buddhas, great Mahaviras, great Krishnas, great Christs—creators of consciousness—whose painting is not on an outer canvas, whose song is not sung in words, who did not sculpt a statue but sculpted themselves; who are sculptors of their own being; who created themselves, became a song, transformed their whole consciousness into a beautiful image—these also are born only when roots run deep in the earth. There is no way for a tree to be on this earth that is afraid of its roots. Your so-called sadhus and sannyasins fear roots. Because of that fear, they cannot be creative. Fear drains their energy. Fighting fear, they die without arriving anywhere. I want to make you fearless. This earth is not opposed to the divine; otherwise it could not have arisen. This life has flowed from That; otherwise, from where?

Last night you said that total aloneness is the essential nature, is the ultimate reality of man. Another day you explained that individuality is false and man is a wave in the organic whole of existence. How is a reconciliation possible between aloneness and wholeness?

There is no need of reconciliation. Aloneness is wholeness. But aloneness doesn't mean individuality. You are an individual because of society. When you are totally alone you will not be an individual. An individual means a part of a society, a unit of a society. When you are in the crowd you are an individual; when you move out of the crowd not only is the crowd dropping behind, the individual also is dropping behind. That individuality was given to you. Individuality and society are two poles of one phenomenon. Alone you are not an individual; the individual has to exist in a pattern of society. It is just as when I said that alone you are neither good nor bad, alone you are neither sage nor sinner, alone you are neither beautiful nor ugly, alone you are neither wise nor foolish. Both the dualities drop. The dichotomy drops. The…

Osho, is there any practical process for being in the realm of existence beyond thoughts, in the void?

The way to thin them out is non-cooperation. Right now we are their makers—that is, we are the ones maintaining them. When we sit idle, some thought or other is running, because without our cooperation they cannot run. Withdraw your cooperation from whatever thoughts are running, and do nothing else; regard just this as samayik, as meditation. If all thoughts dissolve, you will feel no ego and no person within. You will know only being—only being will be known, in which the distinction “I am an individual” or “I am the whole” will not be felt. Only pure being will remain—pure existence. In truth, because of the thoughts accumulated upon that pure existence, we appear to be a person. This sense that I am “A,” you are “B,” you are “C”—the A, B, C we have pasted on—is our thought-power. We commonly say, “I will become liberated”—this is not quite…
