According to Osho, the survival of communes hinges less on a society’s affluence and more on their alignment with its power structures. Buddha and Mahavira’s followers endured because they depended on and upheld prevailing morality. His commune, a self-sufficient revolt against church, state, and culture, inevitably attracted annihilation. Any alternative society that refuses dependence and challenges the established order will be crushed, however rich the surrounding society.
Communes last when they fit in and rely on society; if they try to stand alone and fight the system, society shuts them down, rich or not.
