Category: Tantra Duration: 20 minutes per session, twice daily (morning on waking and at bedtime)

The Golden Light Meditation is a simple, luminous method for transforming energy and allowing it to rise. Practiced as you awaken and again as you drift into sleep, it uses breath and vivid inner imagery to cleanse, balance, and harmonize the vital currents within. On the in-breath, a sun-bright stream of golden light descends through the crown and pours to the toes; on the out-breath, a cool, dark river ascends from the toes and flows out of the head. These two currents—active and receptive, solar and lunar—meet in a dance that renews the body, quiets the mind, and opens a clear passage to the innermost core.

Morning practice moves with the rising tide of universal energy, making entry effortless and deep; night practice seeps into the subconscious as you fall asleep, continuing its work beyond awareness. Osho presents this as a devotional yet practical Tantra technique: ride the upward surge at dawn, dissolve into the tender descent at dusk, and let transformation happen without repression. Practiced consistently for at least three months, it refines creativity, calms the system, and gently reorients life from within.

Phase Instructions

First Stage: Morning Practice — Ride the Rising Tide

Begin the moment you realize you are awake, before getting out of bed. Lie on your back as you are, eyes closed. Let the body remain soft and unmoving. Breathe slowly and deeply so the imagery can be clear and unhurried. With each inhalation, visualize a radiant sun just above your head. See and feel a stream of golden light entering through the crown, as if your body is a hollow vessel filling from head to toes. Let the golden current cleanse every fiber as it flows downward and out through the toes—bright, warm, life-giving (the active, creative, "male" energy). With each exhalation, visualize a cool, velvety darkness like a great dark river entering through the toes, rising through the whole body, and flowing out through the head—the receptive, soothing, restful "feminine" energy. Keep the pace slow and continuous: inhale golden light down through the crown to the toes; exhale dark river up from the toes and out the crown. Continue for 20 minutes, allowing the freshness of just-waking—when the mind has natural gaps—to let the method sink to your innermost core.

Second Stage: Night Practice — Melt Into Sleep

At bedtime, lie on your back and relax quietly. When you notice yourself hovering between waking and sleep, begin the same cycle for 20 minutes. Inhale and let golden light descend through the head, washing down to the toes; exhale and let the dark river ascend from the toes and flow out through the head. Keep everything languid and effortless. If you fall asleep during the process, allow it—the imprint continues in the subconscious and goes on working through the night. Practice at least twice daily (morning and night). Continue for a minimum of three months and let transformation unfold naturally, without any repression or strain.

The tao, the undivided, great one, gives rise to two opposite reality principles, the dark and the light, yin and yang. From yin comes the receptive feminine principle; from yang comes the creative masculine principle; from yin comes ming, life; from yang, hsing or human nature.

EACH INDIVIDUAL CONTAINS A CENTRAL MONAD, WHICH, AT THE MOMENT OF CONCEPTION, SPLITS INTO LIFE AND HUMAN NATURE, MING AND HSING. IN THE PERSONAL BODILY EXISTENCE OF THE INDIVIDUAL THEY ARE REPRESENTED BY TWO OTHER POLARITIES, ANIMA AND ANIMUS. ALL DURING THE LIFE OF THE INDIVIDUAL THESE TWO ARE IN CONFLICT, EACH STRIVING FOR MASTERY. IF THE LIFE-ENERGY FLOWS DOWNWARD, THAT IS, WITHOUT LET OR HINDRANCE INTO THE OUTER WORLD, THE ANIMA IS VICTORIOUS OVER THE ANIMUS; NO GOLDEN FLOWER IS DEVELOPED. IF THE LIFE-ENERGY IS LED THROUGH THE 'BACKWARD-FLOWING' PROCESS, THAT IS, CONSERVED, AND MADE TO 'RISE' INSTEAD OF ALLOWED TO DISSIPATE, THE ANIMUS HAS BEEN VICTORIOUS. A MAN WHO HOLDS TO THE WAY OF CONSERVATION ALL THROUGH LIFE MAY REACH THE STAGE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER, WHICH THEN FREES THE EGO FROM THE CONFLICT OF THE OPPOSITES, AND IT AGAIN BECOMES PART OF THE TAO, THE UNDIVIDED, GREAT…

That is why Buddha did not even give this third experience the name “God.” He called it nirvana. Nirvana means the lamp going out. This is nirvana. The divine is nirvana. There your little lamp completely goes out—because there is no need for it. There, source-less light is present. What will you do with your flickering lamp? It has no meaning. There too fear will arise. Some stop at the experience of light. Some stop at the experience of bliss. But one who does not reach to the divine has not yet reached the ultimate. He will wander—even if he experiences light, he will wander. Even if he experiences bliss, he will wander. Until you are annihilated—fana—until you are totally gone, you will wander. Your very being is your wandering. So, in this third stage, the great death will surround you.

Question: MASTER LU-TSU SAID: NOW THERE ARE THREE CONFIRMATORY EXPERIENCES WHICH CAN BE TESTED. THE FIRST IS THAT, WHEN ONE HAS ENTERED THE STATE OF MEDITATION, THE GODS ARE IN THE VALLEY. MEN ARE HEARD TALKING AS THOUGH AT A DISTANCE OF SEVERAL HUNDRED PACES, EACH ONE QUITE CLEAR. BUT THE SOUNDS ARE ALL LIKE AN ECHO IN A VALLEY. ONE CAN ALWAYS HEAR THEM, BUT NEVER ONESELF. THIS IS CALLED: 'THE PRESENCE OF THE GODS IN THE VALLEY.' AT TIMES THE FOLLOWING CAN BE EXPERIENCED: AS SOON AS ONE IS QUIET, THE LIGHT OF THE EYES BEGINS TO BLAZE UP, SO THAT EVERYTHING BEFORE ONE BECOMES QUITE BRIGHT AS IF ONE WERE IN A CLOUD. IF ONE OPENS ONE'S EYES AND SEEKS THE BODY, IT IS NOT TO BE FOUND ANY MORE. THIS IS CALLED: 'IN THE EMPTY CHAMBER IT GROWS LIGHT'. INSIDE AND OUTSIDE, EVERYTHING IS EQUALLY LIGHT.

The state in which the soul, with the help of the energies of the sun and other gods, and through the instrumentality of these fourteen: mind, intellect, mind stuff, ego, and the ten sense organs -- becomes sensitive to sound, touch and such other gross objects, is called the waking state. When the living being, on account of the unfulfilled desires of the waking state, becomes sensitive to sound, touch and such other gross objects -- even in the absence of the latter -- it is called the dreaming state of the self or soul.

This state of dreaming, the rishi says, means without the instrumentality of your senses. The senses are closed -- they are not aware of the world beyond you; now you are within your cells, within your body, but still you can create you own worlds. This creation of your own worlds in dreams becomes possible because your mind is a conditioning of everything you have known, you have felt; everything has been accumulated in it. It is an accumulation, not only of this life, but of all the lives one has lived; and not only of human lives, of animal lives also; and not only of animal lives, but of vegetable lives also. So in a dream you can become a tree; in a dream you can become a lion. Sometime you have been a tree: that memory is still there -- it can unfold. This unfolding of past memories,…

the moment you become one with light, fountains of bliss begin to burst... every hair, the heartbeat, each breath is filled with bliss... experience bliss, experience... all around is bliss... outside-inside there is bliss... drowned in bliss... all around is bliss... outside-inside there is bliss... drowned in bliss... become one... Two minutes... bliss... bliss... bliss... every hair has filled with bliss... bliss... bliss... bliss... the density of bliss itself becomes the presence of the Paramatman... only by going deep into bliss does the experience of the Lord begin... He is present all around — here and now... experience... become one with bliss and His presence begins... experience the Paramatman present — all around, here and now... experience the Paramatman present — all around, only He is... outside-inside only He is... experience the Lord present — all around He alone surrounds... we have drowned in His very ocean and become one...
