Osho on Correction

Correction

In the wisdom of Osho, true transformation emerges not from imposed correction, a mere power play of authority, but from awakening the consciousness; as awareness blossoms, authentic actions arise effortlessly, revealing morality as the natural fragrance of our awakened state.

Does anything or anyone need correction? It puzzles me.

PREM TUSHEER, NOBODY NEEDS CORRECTION. And who is going to correct? The moment it is said that somebody needs correction, sooner or later somebody is needed to dominate you, to manipulate you, to make a slave out of you. That's why leaders down the ages have been calling and shouting from the housetops that everything needs to be corrected, everything needs to be changed? improved. If nothing needs to be corrected, they won't be leaders any more. They live on the idea that things need to be improved, revolutions have to be done -- then they are great leaders. And nothing is ever improved, nothing can ever be improved. You can either be fast asleep or awake. And awakening is not a correction, remember. It is not correcting your sleep. If sleep is corrected that will mean a few more tranquillizers are injected in you so that you can sleep…

Osho, what do you want man to do? What is right and wrong according to you? Is there something like sin and its punishment too?

Perhaps I am the only person here, on this whole earth, who is objecting that this is befooling people. This is creating a camouflage, a bogus spiritual jargon. If God has any sense, any intelligence at all, He should find some better way to bring the best out in people. This does not seem to be very intelligent. If this is what God is doing then where is the devil? And what will the devil do? God has taken his job too; the devil is unemployed. And people applauded her; she is a great saint. And what present has she brought to them? -- a small statue of Mother Mary. A great help: "Pray to Mother Mary, and don't take it as a tragedy and don't complain that it is the fault or carelessness of certain officers concerned; no, that is not good." Of course if those people were not…

Osho, your satsang is nothing less than heaven for me. It hurts deeply to be away from you. After this life I have not the slightest desire to be born again. But I make hundreds of mistakes. Please shower your compassion and guide me!

I don’t tell you, “If you smoke, stop.” I don’t—because that has been said to you so much and you still haven’t stopped. The sadhus and saints kept saying it till they died, and you did not stop. What is the point of my repeating it? Those who keep repeating it—I take them to be unintelligent. So many kept repeating and people didn’t listen; then there is a flaw in the very approach. Perhaps the root cause of smoking has never been understood; people just go on repeating empty words. Someone says, “Don’t smoke—you’ll get tuberculosis.” But he takes it for granted that you are afraid of TB. Who is afraid! People say, “When it happens, we’ll see. There is medicine, treatment.” And if you look into a book, you will read that if a man smokes twelve cigarettes a day for twenty years, then he may get TB. Who…

Osho, please understand one thing: in any country, if the society happens to be spiritualist, then those who don’t get a chance in it are pulled toward materialism; and in other countries, those who are materialists—when they don’t get a chance—are pulled the other way. So it is the chance-less who have erected the opposite cult. What do you say about this?

And remember, this small path that takes us from sleep into awakening is religion in the fundamental sense—this small path! Neither temples, nor rituals, nor sacrifices have anything to do with it. All this is meaningless. These are the devices of sleeping people. Temples, prayers, fire rituals, chanting mantras, repeating “Ram, Ram”—these are the creations of the sleeping. A sleeping man also manufactures a kind of religion—and then it becomes the cause of quarrels: Hindu, Muslim, Christian. These are differences of ritual, not of religion. One sleeping man builds one kind of temple—he doesn’t know what a temple is; he is building it himself. Ten other sleeping men build a mosque; ten more build a church. Then the three fight: ours is the true temple; whoever does not come to our temple will go to hell. Sleeping men also coin doctrines, create systems. They try to explain. But the explanations…

"Nobody needs correction; what is needed is awakening, for suffering arises from sleep, not sin. When awareness dawns, right action flowers naturally."

You don’t need fixing—just wake up by becoming more aware, and right living will happen on its own.
