Osho's perspective on Biological
When Osho Spoke About Biological
Passages from the discourses where this theme comes alive.
Osho, how can it be biological? What is biological is that after the swoon there is an experience. And without experience how can sex happen? How can it be biological?
There is no such “experience” happening to you. In sum, all that happens is this: the tension of your mind relaxes when the energy goes out of the body—nothing more. You mistake that relaxation for a great experience. There is no “experience” as such. Then tension gathers again, the burden piles up again; then, through the discharge of semen, the energy goes out and you relax again. What experience do you have—none! Has any such experience ever really happened? An experience can happen, but the means for that are different; then it is no longer a matter of sex. Biologically, it only relaxes your tension. That is why for very relaxed people it is not needed; for very tense people the need grows. The more the tension, the more the sex. The reason there is so much sexuality in the West is nothing else: the psyche has become intensely tense.…
Beloved Osho, does sex energy need to be expressed through sex, or is it just that we label this energy as such through biological needs? If energy doesn't get expressed through sex, is it a repression, or can it be transformed and find other channels?
The energy can be transformed, but only after you have lived it naturally. If you have not expressed it naturally -- sex energy, sexually -- you cannot move towards transformation. When sex is expressed as pure sex -- and there is no sin in it, there is no need to feel guilty about it; this is the way your bodies are made, this is the way your biology functions -- express it. Just by expressing it naturally, there will come a moment when the compulsion to express it as sex will disappear. That is the turning moment, now transformation is possible. First, natural expression to the satisfaction of the natural instinct in you, and then transformation is possible, because now the energy will not compel you to express it as sex; it is satisfied. It has known what sexual experience is. Only after this, the transformation is possible, and the…
Some creatures die after a single mating. Some insects can mate only once and in the very act they die. In Africa there is a spider that mates only once and dies in the very posture of mating—so much energy is exhausted. Man learned long ago that sexual experience depletes energy, reduces life-force, and draws death nearer. He repents. Yet after a few hours he finds the same longing again. Surely there is some further meaning in this longing that must be understood. In the longing for sex there is a religious experience, a spiritual experience. If we can see that experience, we can go beyond sex. If not, we will live and die within it. If we can see it… In a dark night lightning flashes. If we can perceive and understand electricity, we can one day dispel the dark night.
Osho, with the neighbor there is of course a bond of love, and also a relationship of give-and-take—how can we drop that?
No, no, no. That’s not what I am saying. You haven’t understood me. Grasp what I am saying very scientifically. There is a sexual instinct within us, and we say we must sublimate it. I am asking: why must we? Is sex not giving you pleasure? You say the pleasure of sublimation will be attained! First it is necessary to know whether sex is not giving you pleasure—or is it that others say it doesn’t, and you have believed them? Are you following me? If, from your own experience, it comes to you that there is no joy in it, then sublimation will begin. Do you understand? Sublimation will begin. From whatever does not give me joy, my hands naturally withdraw. But the difficulty is that others say there is no joy in sex, that joy will be found in sublimation, while I am in fact getting pleasure. Hence the…
"Sex is merely a biological release valve; true transformation comes from within, not from the act itself."
