Don’t change for others; look honestly inside, and real change will happen by itself.

Question: Osho, to me the present state of world affairs appears illusory. Eminent scholars from different walks of life offer various themes for the transformation of life. For instance, religious leaders affirm that God or religion alone is omnipotent and can transform life and provide heaven. Sociologists, politicians, educationists and moralists believe that only better forms can create a better society. Naturalists say that understanding nature will bring transformation. Whereas psychologists and psychopathologists believe that psychoanalysis, tranquilizers, sedatives or brainwashing agents can transform life, etc., etc. But to me, sir, all this appears to be merely a partial transformation. Would you suggest what total and spontaneous transformation is? Man has constantly been thinking how life can be transformed from the roots. There are reasons for such thinking: as life is, there seems to be nothing in it but sorrow, pain, restlessness, struggle and strife.
Osho, I get bored reading your books. I don’t even feel like meditating. And the desire to listen to taped discourses is next to nothing. Even in your discourses I can tell in advance what you are going to say. Still there is no transformation—why? And if there has been no transformation, then why do I feel bored with reading, listening and meditating? And, Master, don’t you get bored repeating the same thing day after day?
So a difference has come. Of those who came to me in those days, ninety-nine percent have left. I knew they would. I had not really spoken for them. It was only because of the one percent who remained that I had to speak even to the ninety-nine percent. I have chosen those few. Now, even here, I am not speaking to a crowd. I no longer speak by paying much attention to you. I don’t worry whether it will interest you or not, whether it will appeal to you or not. I do not speak keeping you in mind. Now my attention is on what I have to say. And gradually I would prefer that those who do not find it interesting, who feel bored—step aside, take their leave. Because I will go deeper and deeper. Soon a moment will come when only a very few birds will remain…
Osho, just now you said that lust—more lust—means a greater distance from the Divine; and elsewhere you say that transformation happens only at the peak of lust. Please clarify.
But we cannot muster any courage. Hence the difficulty of those in the middle: they continue to believe both sides. They read the Gita in the morning and say, “Lust is the enemy,” and then spend their days and nights fantasizing about lust. “Krishna says so,” they say—but the heart says, “Lust is the friend.” So again they read the Gita in the morning, then live in lust for twenty-four hours, then read the Gita again. It becomes a routine. They live in lust and, by reading against lust, they also lighten their minds. This is a clever trick. Thus they do double work: they live in lust, and they also keep assuring themselves, “I am not a bad man—I read the Gita daily; lust is the enemy.” “I am a good man—only the time hasn’t come yet; the Lord’s grace has not yet descended; past-life karmas are obstructing; the…
Osho, the witness, the seer, consciousness is always separate—virginal and unbound. And the whole play of life is nothing but the movement of the gunas within themselves. In such a situation, if a person’s qualities of sattva, rajas, and tamas are calmed in a scientific or chemical way, or if a person is made sattvic, will he then attain that ever-free witness? If the witness is forever free and present, then by chemically altering the three gunas will it not be revealed? Would the person not then become religious? What is the fundamental difference between solving the problem arising from the
Sadhana means we are dissolving the current itself, not breaking the bulb. There is no point in breaking the bulb. In fact, the bulb is useful; it tells you whether the current is flowing or not, whether there is current or not. Your anger within tells you you are still sunk in ignorance. Lust tells you your life energies have not yet become aware. If we remove these elements, anger will stop manifesting and you will also stop knowing that you are in deep ignorance. It is as if a man is sick and we snatch away the symptoms of his disease so that he doesn’t even come to know he is ill. And keep in mind, anger is an opportunity. Only the unwise say anger is simply bad; I do not say so. Anger is an opportunity; you can use it badly or well. Anger is a chance. In…
Osho, for years the mind has been learning about oneness, yet it does not see the One. The words of wisdom sound appealing, but the mind is not willing to act. So many years have gone in listening, yet no transformation comes. The same hatred and separations appear. Grant us the vision you have—to see as you see, with that by which you see.
So I will say to you: consent. What need is there for change? As you are, you are so good, so beautiful—your glory is such; what more is needed? Whatever you have been given, fulfill it. If you are a shopkeeper, then a shopkeeper—do not hanker to be a sannyasin. You will become a sannyasin at the shop itself. If you are a servant, then a servant—do not hanker to be the master. If you express the servant’s spirit totally, you will become the master. Chains may lie upon your hands, slavery may be your role, but if you perform it with your whole being and can thank the Divine without any complaint, your freedom is unobstructed. No chain can hold you; your sovereignty is boundless. So I do not tell you to change the script, to alter the plot. I tell you: accept. Acceptance is my key. And Lao…
