According to Osho, sannyasin energy greed is the ego’s tendency to convert even spiritual energy, kundalini, powers, or enlightenment into objects of craving and possession. Greed is the same disease whatever the object. The cure is awareness of the misery greed creates and shifting from hoarding to sharing—the natural rhythm of life’s in-breath and out-breath—so love, prayer, meditation, and beauty can happen.

Trying to own spiritual energy or experiences is still greed; relax, share, and let them flow.

All greed is Jewish. 'Jew' is not the name of a certain race. No, anybody who is greedy is a Jew. And greed has nothing to do with money. Money is only one object of greed; anything can become the object. KUNDALINI can become the object of greed; spiritual energy, psychic powers NIRVANA, enlightenment, can become the object of greed... but then you are a Jew. A friend has asked: Osho, is striving to get more of what is worth having also greed? What would you say about acquiring more wealth in order to give more in charity?

Among the enemies like lust and anger, we have, by and large, done a little injustice to greed. Greed is not, in the same way as anger and attachment, wholly harmful—or else I have completely misunderstood greed. A few things about greed need to be kept in mind. First, lust, anger, attachment—are nothing compared to greed. Greed is a very deep phenomenon. When a small child is born, there is no lust in him, but there is greed. Lust comes later; greed comes with birth. Anger is contextual. It arises when circumstances are adverse. But circumstances feel adverse in the first place because greed is inside. Anger is a by-product of greed. If there is no greed within, there will be no anger. When someone obstructs your greed, anger arises. This can only be if the guru’s own desire still remains—if he has not yet fully known sannyas. He is not a guru in the true sense. He grips the disciple badly, binds him from all sides, becomes possessive. This will not only be with persons—it will be with things too. The few things that remain with the monk—on them he will project his whole world. That is his world. You would not guard a thing worth a hundred thousand rupees with as much care as a monk guards a two-penny thing. Mahavira says: if such swoon exists, the bhikshu is not yet a bhikshu. Who is not greedy, not rapacious, not covetous… Greed is a very subtle tendency. It has nothing to do with money, house, land. It pertains to a deep inner urge: more, and more—in any field. If you have a hundred thousand rupees, greed will say—more.

Osho, what is greed?

Look within yourself and you will experience great uniqueness. And all inferiority disappears, evaporates; it was created by you and by wrong education, it was created by a subtle strategy -- the strategy of comparison. Once you know your uniqueness you are joyous, and then there is no need to follow anybody. Learn from everybody. An intelligent person even learns from idiots, because there are few things you can learn only from idiots because they are experts in idiocy.
