Osho on What is fundamental and what is secondary?

What is fundamental and what is secondary?

The fundamental is the silent witnessing space beyond opposites; in that stillness, where clinging ceases, awareness unfolds as the ultimate truth.

— Osho
According to Osho, nothing within the play of opposites is fundamental—love/hate, life/death, pleasure/pain arise together and are equal; cling to one and you summon its counterpart. The fundamental is the silent witnessing space beyond both, a presence neither young nor old, nameless and ineffable. Renunciation means letting go of clinging, so the cycle relaxes and a stainless, wordless awareness remains; there, silence is the statement.

The real you is the quiet space watching everything, while happy-sad and life-death come as a pair—stop grabbing either side and rest in the middle.

It is asked: “Which is fundamental? Which is secondary?”

None. They are together. And if you are to drop one, you have to drop both. That is why the sages of India have said: if you want to be safe from death, you will have to renounce life. Consider it this way. The enlightened ones have said: if you want to be rid of death, you must be rid of life. As long as you cling to life, death will keep coming. In the very act of clutching at life you have invited death. The craving to live will bring death, and the wheel of life and death will keep spinning. Let go of life, and death drops by itself. You desired respect; then disrespect will keep arriving. Drop respect, and disrespect falls away by itself. You wanted to possess; then somewhere along the way you are destined to suffer the pain of loss. Let go yourself—then nothing can…

Consider movement stationary and the stationary in motion, and both the state of movement and the state of rest disappear. When such dualities cease to exist oneness itself cannot exist. To this ultimate finality no law or description applies.

FOR THE UNIFIED MIND IN ACCORD WITH THE WAY ALL SELF CENTERED STRIVING CEASES. DOUBTS AND IRRESOLUTIONS VANISH AND LIFE IN TRUE FAITH IS POSSIBLE. WITH A SINGLE STROKE WE ARE FREED FROM BONDAGE; NOTHING CLINGS TO US AND WE HOLD NOTHING. ALL IS EMPTY, CLEAR, SELF-ILLUMINATING, WITH NO EXERTION OF THE MIND'S POWER. HERE THOUGHT, FEELING, KNOWLEDGE, AND IMAGINATION ARE OF NO VALUE. CONSIDER MOVEMENT STATIONARY AND THE STATIONARY IN MOTION, AND BOTH THE STATE OF MOVEMENT AND THE STATE OF REST DISAPPEAR. THIS IS ONE of the most basic things. Try to understand as deeply as possible. The mind can see only one pole, and reality is two poles, the two opposite poles together. The mind can see one extreme; in the one extreme the other is hidden, but the mind cannot penetrate it. And unless you see both the opposites together you will never be able to…

Osho, what is the definition of God?

Words are very small. If you say God is light, then what of darkness? The scriptures have said that God is light. Suppose we accept this as a definition—then what about darkness? Where will darkness go? Darkness is too; in fact it is far more than light. Light sometimes is and sometimes is not; darkness is always, eternal. Where will you place darkness? If you say God is light, darkness is left out. If you say God is darkness, then light is left out. If you say God is both darkness and light, a contradiction arises: they cannot be together. Try to have both darkness and light in the same room. If you bring in light, darkness disappears; if you preserve darkness, you cannot have light. Then how can both be together? That becomes an impossibility. So you cannot say “both” either. Then the fourth device is to say: it…

To return to the root is to find the meaning, but to pursue appearances is to miss the source. At the moment of inner enlightenment there is a going beyond appearance and emptiness. The changes that appear to occur in the empty world we call real only because of our ignorance. Do not search for the truth; only cease to hold opinions.

DO NOT REMAIN IN THE DUALISTIC STATE; AVOID SUCH PURSUITS CAREFULLY. IF THERE IS A TRACE OF THIS AND THAT, THE RIGHT AND WRONG, THE MIND ESSENCE WILL BE LOST IN CONFUSION. ALTHOUGH ALL DUALITIES COME FROM THE ONE, DO NOT BE ATTACHED EVEN TO THIS ONE. WHEN MIND EXISTS UNDISTURBED IN THE WAY, NOTHING IN THE WORLD CAN OFFEND, AND WHEN A THING CAN NO LONGER OFFEND, IT CEASES TO EXIST IN THE OLD WAY. WHEN NO DISCRIMINATING THOUGHTS ARISE, THE OLD MIND CEASES TO EXIST. All opposites are together in existence. Inside you are divided, outside they are divided. When you fall to your source and you become one, the whole existence suddenly falls into line and becomes one. When you are one, the BRAHMA appears, the ultimate appears, because to the one only one can appear; to the two, the two; to the many, the many. And…

A friend has asked: Osho, while explaining the vast form of the Divine, yesterday you spoke of the dialectical existence of birth and death, creation and dissolution, the beautiful and the terrible, and so on. Please explain whether that supreme truth which is called Amrit or Sat-Chit-Ananda is the sum of these opposites, or whether it is some third reality beyond the two.

Duality is all around. Wherever you look in the world, you will never see the One; the opposite will always be present. The very way the world exists is impossible without the opposite. Understand this one thing well. Just as a mason builds an arched doorway by fitting opposite bricks together—if the bricks are laid all in one direction, the arch will collapse. Opposing bricks, by working against each other, become the very support that holds the doorway up. The whole universe is made of opposing bricks. There is light only because there is also darkness; and darkness can be only so long as there is light. Light and darkness are opposite bricks, for two reasons. First, all the bricks are of the same substance, so we can set them in opposition. Darkness and light are two forms of the same reality. The bricks are alike, yet they are placed…
