"Beautiful large grounds to stroll around. It seems like a neighborhood of temples. One might need to pay separately to visit other sub temples within this complex. Not so much of cherry or maple trees but nice gardens all around."

"Impressive Buddhist temple in Kyoto, about a 5 minute walk from the Hanazono station. The temple grounds are free to walk around with apparently some smaller temples within that ask for a fee. I did not see any fee areas. It was difficult to know which buildings were open or closed, so I just walked around and poked my head in a few places. There is also a stone path around the perimiter with period residential buildings and what appeared to be small monastic buildings. Overall, this is a beautiful temple compound with several well preserved buildings and gardens. Not crowded on a Thursday in February. I spent about an hour walking around and taking photos."

"Beautiful temple, the complex inside it is huge and it seems like there's a residential area behind it with traditional Kyoto house style. Very nice neighborhood. In one of the building, there's a zen garden experience that you can book, but it closes at 5 PM."

"That was just a very beautiful experience. This place is the largest zen buddhist monastry in japan! Most temples are closed but you can walk through the area and enjoy the architecture and nature. Also, make sure to visit the taizoin garden. The garden is beautiful and has a very special vibe to it. Also, there were no other people when we there, which is great!"

"Very neat temple with a gorgeous ceiling painting of a dragon. It's a massive complex and offers guest houses to those who want to stay overnight. Was a fun visit!! They had a replica of the painting that I was able to get a neat video of to share with folks!"
