Help people wake up one by one with love and creativity, and don't join the crowd's angry games about religion or identity.
From the Discourses
Passages where Osho speaks to this question — each links to the complete discourse.
Osho, in human life crimes range from lies to rape and murder. Since ancient times sages and saints have inspired righteous action. In this context, please explain how today’s enlightened class should resolve the disorder-born problems of human life?
Now there are two kinds of people. One: those who harm others—you call them sinners, wrongdoers. Two: those who harm themselves for the good of others—you call them saints. There is not much difference between the two. One harms others; one harms himself—both harm. I call him a saint who harms no one—neither another, nor himself. Only when such a rare event happens does a ray of religion descend. This event does not happen to the crowd—it cannot. It is asked again: “In this context, please explain how today’s ‘enlightened’ class should solve the disorder-born problems of human life?” Whom do you call enlightened? Because you got a university degree? Because you managed to publish a few articles in two-bit newspapers? Whom do you call enlightened? Because you can spout a little nonsense in a logically dressed-up way? Whom do you call enlightened? “Enlightened” is a very big word. Do…
Osho, as I understand your teaching, you want every individual to be aware and to understand life in its totality. But today’s society is very complicated. Our environment is so complicated that it does not allow us to live a free life, to love people, or to live in the state in which we could live a very clean and smooth life.
Society is as it is; only by accepting this truth can anything be done. Society is like this—but if a person can see that apart from a simple, loving, joyous, clean life there is no life at all; if he sees that without becoming loving he will remain deprived of life’s joy; if he sees that without becoming simple there is no path to reach truth—then he will drop worrying about what society is like. For what can society give him—what is it giving? Once he sees that in another direction—which society does not offer and in fact obstructs—there lies the doorway to his life’s bliss, he will begin to move toward it. Certainly the social order will create obstacles. But for such a person they will not be obstacles; they will turn into challenges, and he will try to make steps out of them. The stones thrown onto his…
Osho, from your talks we get a fairly clear sense of what ought to be done. But how should it be done? And not so much on an individual basis—please tell us, in more detail, what should be done as a community and as a society.
That would be easier if I came again and stayed a day or two. But for now, there is only one thing before the country: do not be in a hurry to do anything, and spread a climate of thought. Do not rush into action right now. Until the country has a right clarity, any attempt at doing will more likely lead to mistakes and upheaval. The country does not yet have a clear mind; haste for action will drop us into a ditch and take us nowhere. So I say: for the next five to ten years, the nation should strive to create a mind. Then action follows that mind the way a shadow follows you. Action in itself is not the main issue. Once the country’s mind is clear, what to do and how to do it both become easy. The real difficulty is: who is the doer,…
Osho, from dharma plus concept, or concept plus dharma, culture is created. And from culture, society and its traditions are formed. The Revered One has said that religion is against everyone. If religion remains opposed to all, won’t some kind of anarchy become inevitable? Please be kind enough to explain!
No award of this world can compare with the award of inner bliss. Let the body go, let age go, let wealth go—let everything go—if only the inner nectar remains, then everything remains! He who has lost the inner has lost all. He who has saved the inner has saved all. But ordinarily the Jain goes and returns corrupted. Why? He was already corrupt! It is not that he became corrupt—he was a paper flower, a false thing, a conditioning. Understand the difference between culture and dharma. Dharma is your own direct experience; culture is what has been taught by others. No matter how well-organized, what is taught by another does not liberate you; it binds you. So when I say dharma is rebellion, revolt, I mean—revolt against tradition, revolt against conditioning, revolt against spiritual slavery. But the religious person does not become anarchic. If the religious person became anarchic,…
Question: Third question: Osho, I want to awaken the world. What should I do? In the spiritual sense, saints have always known that you all are asleep even while awake. Krishna has spoken the famous line—remember its opposite as well; it is just as true. Krishna said: “Yā niśā sarva-bhūtānāṁ, tasyāṁ jāgarti saṁyamī”—that which is night to all beings, therein the disciplined one is awake. That is half the statement. The yogi is awake even while asleep; his eyes are closed, yet within there is wakefulness. The non-yogi is asleep even while awake. This is the second half, which Krishna did not say. But I want you to remember it. It is more useful to you. The first will make sense when you become a yogi. For now, remember the second: with eyes open, you are asleep. Ramteerth, don’t ask yet about awakening the world.
