His earlier lives carried only a profound spiritual discontent: a hunger to end ignorance and bondage. Thus his renunciation wasn’t evasion of duties but the flowering of an inner quest; true responsibility shifted from social roles to realizing truth, from which compassionate action may naturally flow.
