According to Osho, God was invented by human fear—of darkness, sickness, old age and, above all, death—as a consoling fiction and postmortem insurance. Priests, also fearful yet cunning, exploited this invention by posing as intermediaries who sell forgiveness. Thus belief becomes an escape from responsibility and existential anxiety, avoiding direct confrontation with mortality, uncertainty, and one’s own actions.
