Sex
Sex, while rooted in our animal nature, transcends mere instinct through the awakening of human consciousness; when infused with awareness and love, it transforms into a sacred bridge, leading us toward the divine rather than a descent into mere desire.
Explore Depth →Superconsciousness
In the dance of existence, where the body may age yet the essence of superconsciousness remains untouched, true evolution lies in the deepening of awareness—a journey that transcends the physical and continues even beyond the confines of death.

Please describe to us the spiritual significance of sex energy. How can we sublimate and spiritualize sex? Is it possible to have sex, to make love, as a meditation, as a jumping board toward higher levels of consciousness?
There is no such thing as sex energy. Energy is one and the same. Sex is one outlet for it, one direction for it; it is one of the applications of the energy. Life energy is one, but it can manifest in many directions. Sex is one of them. When life energy becomes biological, it becomes sex energy. Sex is just an application of the life energy. So there is no question of sublimation. If life energy flows in another direction, there is no sex. But it is not a sublimation; it is a transformation. Sex is the natural, biological flow of life energy, and the lowest application of it. It is natural because life cannot exist without it, and the lowest because it is the foundation not the peak. When sex becomes the totality, the whole life is just a waste. It is like laying a foundation and going…
But, no matter what the astronomical figure may be, it is mathematically possible to calculate the difference, because both are within the range of human cognition; the difference can be ascertained. But it is impossible to assess the differential between the ecstasy of orgasm and the eternal bliss of samadhi. The sexual meeting of two temporal beings is frantic; in uniting with the Universal one loses oneself like a drop in the ocean. There is no way to compare them, no unit to measure the magnitude of this union. Would one hanker after sex after touching this bliss? Would one even think of this fleeting pleasure after one has attained the eternal ocean? A glimpse of the eternal convinces man that sensual pleasure is meaningless, that by contrast it is madness.
You are known throughout the world as the tantra master or the sex guru, yet in the three years I have been in your ashram, not only have I had less sex than ever before in my life, but thought and heard less about it as well. Will you explain this discrepancy?
Just the other day in a magazine, CINE BLITZ, I came across a headline, and they say I am the Hugh Heffner of the spiritual world. And what are they talking about? Yes, I teach you how to go deep in love. I teach you how to go deep in sex too, because that is the only way to go beyond. To go through it is the only way to go beyond it -- but my goal is to take you beyond. Now this is a problem, and I am going to be misunderstood again and again, all over the world. People have become accustomed: they think religious people have to be against sex; and those who are not against sex, how can they be religious? These have become DEADLY settled categories. I am unsettling all those categories, and I don't expect the world to immediately change so much from…
What is tantric sex? After 'monkey sex' and after 'love-bliss sex', before the highest cosmic and religious sex in which no partner is needed, in which the cosmos is the partner, isn't there tantric sex in which two partners are involved, a sex act which is a meditation based on certain techniques?
Many things will happen to the world. First, wars will become impossible. 'There will be no Vietnams and no Israels, because people will never accumulate so much anger in them that they have to kill, and kill millions. Many things will happen to the world if people are natural. Then they will not shout so much as you think they will shout. Right now they are allowed to shout they will shout -- but for how long? If they are given complete freedom, shouts and abusing and condemnation and fights will start disappearing from the world. It is a vicious circle. It is as if you have been starving a person and you don't allow him to go close to the fridge. And you say 'If we allow him he will eat too much. ' And you have been starving him -- and now you are afraid if you allow…
Beloved Osho, would you talk to us about using our sexual energy for growth, as it seems to be one of our main preoccupations in the west.
In a sexual orgasm you ARE. Being is there without any thinking. In this moment, if you can become alert, conscious, then sex can become the door towards the divine. And if in this moment you can become alert, that alertness can be carried in other moments also, in other experiences also. It can become a part of you. Then eating, walking, doing some work, you can carry that alertness. Through sex, the alertness has touched your deepest core. It has penetrated you. Now you can carry it. And, if you become meditative, you will come to realize a new fact. That fact is that it is not sex that gives you bliss, it is not sex that gives you the ecstasy. Rather, it is a thoughtless state of the mind and total involvement in the act that gives you a blissful feeling. Once you understand this then sex will…
The Synthesis
The Intersection: Both represent an overwhelming flood of life energy (Prana) that transcends the boundary of the ordinary, isolated ego.
The Divergence: Sex is the lowest, biological manifestation of this energy moving outward and downward to create physical life. Superconsciousness (Samadhi) is the highest evolutionary manifestation of this exact same energy moving inward and upward to create spiritual awakening.
Osho's Synthesis: This is the core of Osho's Tantra. He insists that sex should not be repressed, as repressed sex becomes perversion. Instead, it must be deeply accepted, understood, and transformed. The same energy that creates life biology can be transmuted through awareness into the ultimate realization of the divine.
No theme earned Osho more scandal, and none is more misread. His claim is not that sex is divine, nor that it is sin — it is that "sex energy" does not exist as a separate thing at all. Life energy is one; sex is merely its lowest, biological application, the foundation and never the peak. Superconsciousness is that same energy transformed — not suppressed, not indulged, but traversed with such awareness that it turns inward and upward.
This is why he insisted on going through rather than around: repression keeps a person circling the first rung forever, while the meditator uses the glimpse of thoughtless timelessness in orgasm as a door. From Sex to Superconsciousness is a trajectory, not a contradiction. The sections below give it in Osho's own words, each linked to the full discourse.
There Is No Such Thing as Sex Energy
Asked how to sublimate and spiritualize sex, Osho first removes the premise — there is nothing separate to sublimate.
There is no such thing as sex energy. Energy is one and the same. Sex is one outlet for it, one direction for it; it is one of the applications of the energy. Life energy is one, but it can manifest in many directions.— The Psychology Of The Esoteric, Chapter 3 →
Orgasm vs Samadhi
From the discourses that became his most famous book: the two ecstasies are incommensurable — and tasting the greater ends the tyranny of the lesser.
Would one hanker after sex after touching this bliss?— From Sex To Superconsciousness, Chapter 4 →
The Door Hidden in the Act
What exactly makes sex a possible doorway? Osho points to the moment of thoughtless presence — and to carrying that alertness into the rest of life.
In a sexual orgasm you ARE. Being is there without any thinking. In this moment, if you can become alert, conscious, then sex can become the door towards the divine.— My Way The Way Of The White Clouds, Chapter 5 →
Through It Is the Only Way Beyond It
Branded the "sex guru" by the press, Osho states the actual teaching — depth, not indulgence; transcendence, not repression.
Yes, I teach you how to go deep in love. I teach you how to go deep in sex too, because that is the only way to go beyond. To go through it is the only way to go beyond it -- but my goal is to take you beyond.— The Secret Of Secrets Vol 2, Chapter 6 →
Frequently Asked
Not by itself. His teaching is that the energy expressed in sex is the same life energy that becomes superconsciousness when transformed — sex is the foundation, samadhi the peak, and the ladder is awareness. Sex approached unconsciously stays biology; approached with total presence and meditation, it can open a first glimpse of thoughtless, timeless being.
Because suppression, in his analysis, never transforms energy — it only twists it into obsession, perversion and hypocrisy, which is why he found the so-called celibate traditions saturated with sexuality. Transformation requires understanding, and understanding requires going through the experience consciously. Repression keeps humanity stuck at the first rung while pretending to be above it.
Osho calls them incomparable in magnitude but structurally kin: both are states of no-thought, egolessness and timelessness. Orgasm is a momentary glimpse purchased through the body and another person; samadhi is the same dissolution made permanent, independent of anyone — the drop merging into the ocean. He said one taste of that bliss ends the hankering after the lesser one.
