Questions in this Discourse
(Osho remains silent for a few minutes and then begins to give suggestions.)
Keep taking deep breaths... take deep breaths and keep watching—the breath is going out, the breath is coming in. Keep your eyes closed, take deep breaths and keep watching—the breath is going in, the breath is going out. Just by watching the breath, the mind will become completely quiet.
Take deep breaths, keep your eyes closed and look within: the breath is going in, the breath is going out. Keep watching the breath... as you watch the breath, the mind becomes quiet. Keep your eyes closed, keep taking deep breaths, and keep watching the breath—the breath is going in, the breath is coming out—I am only the watcher of the breath, I am only watching the breath.
And now I will give a few suggestions. Experience them with me; it will begin to happen just so, and gradually you will descend deeper within.
Those who have come for the first time, also close your eyes. Take deep breaths and keep watching—the breath is going out, the breath is coming in.
Now I suggest: experience exactly with me. Very soon we will be merged into that vastness which is present all around us.
First of all, let the body be loose. The breathing will continue, and keep watching the breath; at the same time, let the body relax. And experience with me that the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... let it go completely loose, as if it were earth. If the body falls on its own, do not stop it; let it fall. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing...
Keep taking deep breaths within and keep watching—the breath is coming in, the breath is going out. At the same time, feel: the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... let it go completely, if it falls, let it fall... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing...
Let go, let go completely... if it bends forward, let it bend; whatever is to happen, let it happen... let the body be loose. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is becoming completely relaxed... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing...
Keep watching the breath—the breath is coming in, the breath is going out. Let the attention remain on the breath, and keep letting the body be loose. Keep letting the body go loose.
Now I will be silent for ten minutes. Keep letting the body be loose, keep watching the breath, keep letting the body go loose. Let each limb be so loose that it is as if there were no body at all. Whatever is to happen, let it happen; do not worry about it. I can see someone is holding back, someone is managing—do not manage it. If it bows, let it bow; if it falls, let it fall. Let the body be completely loose. For ten minutes more, keep watching the breath and keep letting the body go loose. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing. The body is becoming completely relaxed, as if there were no life-force at all. The body is relaxing... let go... the body is relaxing. If it moves, if trembling comes, if the body falls—do not put any obstruction from your side. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... The body is becoming completely relaxed, as if there were no prana at all. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is becoming completely relaxed...
Now for ten minutes I will be silent. Keep watching the breath and keep letting the body be loose. Anyone who feels like lying down, lie down quietly. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... Let go completely. If you feel like lying down, do not keep sitting; let go completely and lie down. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... Let go; do not create a barrier. Let it be completely loose. Wherever it bends, let it bend; if it falls, let it fall. We have to lose ourselves, so do not restrain the body.
Now I will be silent for ten minutes. Keep watching the breath and let the body be loose.
Take deep breaths, keep your eyes closed and look within: the breath is going in, the breath is going out. Keep watching the breath... as you watch the breath, the mind becomes quiet. (Osho remains silent for a few minutes, then begins to give guidance.)
Keep watching the breath... keep your eyes closed. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... Let the body go completely, as if it is not there at all. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... Let go—if it bends, let it bend; if it falls, let it fall; if it trembles, let it tremble; if crying comes, let it come; if tears fall, let the tears fall. Let go completely; keep no control from your side. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... Keep watching the breath and keep loosening the body. If you feel like lying down, lie down. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... Leave the body utterly loose, as if there is no life-force in it; let it drop like a clod of earth. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... The body has become utterly lifeless, as if it is not there.
Let go, and the very moment you release your grip on the body, the mind will go very deep. The body’s hold loosens and the mind goes deep. Let go—let go completely—so you can descend into depth. As the body drops away from the mind, depth arrives. Let go; no one should hold back—do not restrain the body in the least. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... If you need to lie down, lie down—only do not hold back. The body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body is relaxing... the body has become completely relaxed...
Keep attention on the breath and leave the body lifeless. The breath is going in, the breath is coming out—only the breath remains. Release your grip on the body; keep attention on the breath. The body has relaxed... keep watching the breath, keep watching, keep watching, and keep the body loose. Leave the body utterly loose. The body has relaxed... the body has relaxed... Let no one restrain—do not check the body at all; leave it utterly loose. Wherever it bends, let it bend; if it lies down, let it lie down. Leave it utterly loose. The body has relaxed... the body has relaxed... the body has relaxed... the body has relaxed... the body has relaxed...
Let go, so that I may tell you the third experiment; leave the body utterly loose. For only those who release their hold on the body will be able to enter the third. The body has dropped... the body has loosened completely... If it is falling, let it fall; if it is bending, let it bend—keep not even the slightest hold. Do not, from your side, manage or prop up the body.
The body has relaxed... In a minute or two leave it utterly loose, so that you may enter the third experiment. The body has relaxed... the breath is being observed... the breath is seen going in and coming out, it is being experienced. The body has relaxed... the body has relaxed... the body has relaxed... The body has become completely relaxed, lifeless. The body has relaxed... the body has relaxed... the body has relaxed... the body has relaxed... the body has become utterly lifeless...
Now I will tell you the third experiment. Keep your eyes closed; keep watching the breath. This is a deep experiment in meditation. Now begin this third experiment within. The breath is visible—coming in and going out; the body has been left relaxed. Let the lips remain completely closed; let the tongue touch the palate. Register this inwardly: the lips are closed, the tongue has touched the palate, the body is relaxed, the breath is being observed. Now, while watching each breath, begin to ask inwardly: Who am I? Who am I? Let the watching of the breath continue, and within, ask with intensity: Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Within the mind itself, ask intensely: Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Ask so swiftly that there is no space between two askings. Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Put your whole energy within and ask: Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Let the breath remain seen, and ask within: Who am I? Who am I?... Let a storm arise within... Who am I? Who am I? With such force, as if we are knocking on a closed door. Who am I? Who am I? With such force that the entire life-energy is thrown into the asking—Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?...
For a good ten minutes, ask intensely within: Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?... The whole body will tremble, the life-energy will tremble, the breath will tremble. Ask within: Who am I? Who am I? Put your entire strength into it—Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?...
Let the watching of the breath continue... the breath is visible—going in, coming out—and with each breath keep asking: Who am I? Who am I?... And take no curiosity about anyone else; mind your own inquiry. Keep your eyes closed. Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?... For a good ten minutes, so swiftly that you become drenched in sweat. Put all your power into it. After this, there will be an entry into wondrous peace. Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?...
Now I will be silent. For ten minutes you ask—Who am I? Who am I?... You must ask with your whole strength—Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?... Ask with force; exhaust yourself completely. Ask as much as you possibly can, so that afterward everything becomes silent. Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?...
Let go, and the very moment you release your grip on the body, the mind will go very deep. The body’s hold loosens and the mind goes deep. Let go—let go completely—so you can descend into depth.

Ask with force; exhaust yourself completely. Ask as much as you possibly can, so that afterward everything becomes silent. Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?...
(Intense responses from seekers rise in many voices... Osho remains silent for a while, then begins to offer guidance.)
Who am I? Keep asking yourself intensely—Who am I? Who am I? Keep attention on the breath. Ask—Who am I? With your total strength, ask—Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?... Put in as much energy as you can—Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?...
Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? With your whole strength—Who am I?...
For the last five minutes, ask within with full power—Who am I? So much so that a storm arises. Then drop everything and become quiet. The more the mind goes into the storm, into the whirlwind, the deeper the peace that will be available. Who am I? Who am I?... Keep watching the breath... Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?...
Who am I? Who am I?... Use your final reserves of strength—Who am I? Who am I?... Let it begin to resound in every pore of your life-force—Who am I?... Let it echo in every fiber—Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?...
Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?...
Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?... The last two minutes—Who am I? Put in your total strength. Then for ten minutes we will simply lie without doing anything. We will neither watch the breath nor ask; we will simply remain. We will remain with whatsoever is. So in the end, the more rapidly you ask, the deeper you will descend into the void. Who am I? Who am I?... In the last two minutes pour your entire energy within—Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?... At the full climax, with utmost intensity, ask—Who am I? Who am I?... And when I say, “Drop it and be silent,” then drop everything—the breath, the asking, the watching—then just remain, just being. Who am I? Who am I?... In the final one minute, ask with force—Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?
And let go... drop everything—drop the asking, drop the watching, drop it all. For ten minutes do nothing, just remain. You will hear the birds’ calls, the crows crying, the sound of the ocean’s waves, the wind stirring the leaves—sink into all that is happening around you; become one with it. Let the birds’ voices not remain separate, let the ocean’s roar not remain separate, let the sunlight not remain separate. For ten minutes do nothing; just drown in this vastness, and the mind will touch the ultimate depths and descend into great silence.
Now for ten minutes I will be silent. Dive in completely. Do nothing now. Whatever is, is—remain one with it.

(For ten minutes the meditation experiment continues; after that Osho begins to speak again.)
Now slowly open your eyes... If they don’t open, place both hands over your eyes and then open them gently. Those who have fallen or are lying down, rise slowly. If you cannot get up, first take two or four deep breaths and then get up very gently. No one is to get up with a jerk. If you absolutely cannot get up, remain lying, take deep breaths, and then rise slowly. Not with a jerk—very gently. If it still feels difficult to rise, breathe deeply and then get up slowly.
For tomorrow, keep two or three things in mind before you come.
- First, come after taking a bath. And everyone should arrive five minutes before eight. No one should come late. The door will be closed at eight. Those who come after eight do not understand what is happening; then they sit looking around, someone starts talking. So arrive five minutes before eight. Those who come early should sit quietly with eyes closed and begin the experiment silently as I have instructed. Exactly at eight I will come and have the experiment continue. And set out from home already in silence, so that by the time you reach here the mind is completely quiet. And having come here, do not speak at all.
- If anyone has any inner experience, if any inner question arises, then between three and four in the afternoon—not for intellectual discussion—whoever in meditation feels anything within, has any new experience, or does not understand something, come and speak to me between three and four, alone and quietly. And if anyone has any experience, please do not talk about it with others; otherwise the experience is harmed. If you sense anything, feel anything, any energy becomes active within, you feel a chakra moving, any perception arises—do not speak of it to another; come directly and speak with me between three and four.
- At night, in bed, do the experiment and fall asleep while doing it, so that when you come here tomorrow morning the mind is fully prepared. In these four or five days a deep journey is possible.
- And remember, no one should come here in the capacity of a spectator. It seems a few friends have come with the concern of what is happening to whom. Only those should come who are concerned with what is happening to themselves, who have nothing to do with others. No one should come as a spectator. Because in matters of meditation nothing can be known by looking from the outside.
If one person begins to cry, by looking at him you cannot know what is happening within him. And if, on seeing him, you think anything, it will be wrong. Only he can know what is happening inside him; you cannot. Nor do you know how many burdens can be cut away if a person sheds tears—you do not know this. If someone falls down, you cannot know what is happening within him. If someone’s body is whirling, you do not know what is happening inside.
Therefore, do not form thoughts about others. And do not tell others about yourself either. Those who do not know will only call you mad—that all this is happening, this is madness. Whatever you perceive, come to me between three and four and speak with me. Better still, practice the experiment for four days; whatever there is will transform by itself, it will be resolved.
Even then, if there are any questions, write them down and give them to me, and I will speak about them tomorrow morning.
Our morning session is complete.

Osho's Commentary
Meditation is the name for becoming one with existence. We have limits; to break them and become one with the limitless is its name. We are like a small drop, and just as a drop falls into the ocean and becomes one.... Meditation is not an act; rather, call it non-action, non-doing. For in any act the doer will survive; only in non-action can one be erased. In a certain sense, meditation is the art of dying by one’s own hand. And the wonder is this: those who learn the art of dying are the only ones who attain the supreme meaning of life.
This morning, in this one hour, we shall lose ourselves and attempt to become one with that vastness which spreads all around us. In language it will sound like an effort, but deep within, no effort is possible. We shall not hold ourselves together; we shall let go.
Before I speak to you of the process of meditation, keep two or three small points in mind. There are only a few people, so it is very pleasant. That is why I made no announcement yesterday, so that only a few could come.
First, all of you sit at such a distance that if someone falls in between, they do not fall upon another. When you let go of yourselves completely, many times it will seem as if the body is falling; if you stop it, it will become a hindrance. If it falls, let it fall. Or sit with support somewhere. And those who are sitting above should come down, because there you will remain concerned the whole time with holding yourselves.
Sit at a distance; do not sit too close. No one should be touching anyone, and still keep such space that if someone wishes to lie down in the middle—because in the experiment I am going to lead, many will feel midway that they should lie down—they should lie down; they should not force themselves to sit. Let whatever feels right happen. And have no concern for anyone else’s presence; no one is present there. You are alone; the other is also alone.
In meditation breath has supreme importance. In life as well. While breath is moving, one is alive; when breath is lost, the person is lost.
Just now I went to a house. A woman has been unconscious for nine months; she lies in a coma. And the doctors say she will never regain consciousness—the nerves of her awareness are broken. But she can remain alive for at least three years. She will lie there unconscious. They give medicines by injection and arrange everything. She is almost dead. I went to see their home. I asked that woman’s mother, “Now she is dead, is she not?” She said, “No, where has she died yet? So long as there is breath, there is hope. Her breath is still moving. In every other way she has died, but breath is moving. So there remains one connection with life.” And that old woman said, “What reliance is there on doctors? The one they say will live, dies; so about the one they say must surely die in three years—nothing is certain, she might be saved.”
In life, breath is our connection. And perhaps you have never noticed that even a slight change in the mind is quickly reflected in the breath. If you are in anger, breath moves one way. If you are calm, it moves another way. If you are restless, it moves another way. If you are filled with sexual desire, breath moves yet another way. Breath keeps giving news of the mind all the time. Those who understand the entire process of breath can, by observing your breath, tell where you are within, what you must be doing. If a person’s breath can be understood, everything within that person can be understood.
In meditation, breath is very precious—the most precious. For as you become absorbed into the vast, the breath is transformed. The reverse is also true: if breath is transformed, you will begin to be absorbed into the vast. For example, if someone asks you to keep the breath quiet and be angry, you will be in great difficulty. To keep the breath quiet and be angry is impossible—utterly impossible. Transformation in the breath is inevitable.
So try a small experiment sometime. Whenever anger arises, do not bother about the anger; slow the breath—and you will suddenly find that anger has become impossible. If the breath is slow, anger will become impossible. And when anger becomes impossible, the breath will go on becoming slower still.
If you look at the statues of Buddha and Mahavira, it does not seem as if such people would be breathing. Their breath seems to have come to a standstill. It is not because of the statues. When the mind is utterly quiet, when all its inner turbulence is dissolved and the person is one with the vast, then the breath is transformed from the very roots.
We shall begin with breath. Understand two or three small points. Then, in between, I will give suggestions; keep receiving them.
First point: in meditation we shall sit with eyes closed. But not in such a way that there is any pressure on the eyes. Let the eyes be loose, and let the eyes close by themselves. So do not close the eyes; simply leave them, so that they close. There must be not even the slightest pressure on the eyes. Because the eyes are the most sensitive part of our brain. If there is even a little pressure on the eyes, it becomes very difficult for the inner brain to become silent.
So first gently release the eyelids and feel that the eyes are closing—you are not doing it. Release the eyelids, gently release them, and let the eyes close. Let the eyes close; do not close them. Just leave the eyelids loose, and let the eyes close. Leave them—let the eyes close. As soon as the eyes close...
And here not a single person will sit with open eyes. You have come here only to do this experiment; otherwise you should not come. No one will sit with open eyes.
Close the eyes quietly, leave them loose, and let them close. And then, in between, there is no need to open your eyes to look, because we are going to see within, and within there is no need for the eyes to be open. Close the eyes, leave them loose. And relax the body as well, so that the body does not hinder you in any way, so there is no strain. Whoever wishes to lie down may lie down right now. Leave the body loose as well. The eyes are closed; the body has been left loose. Whoever wants to lie down should lie down quietly. Now take your attention to the breath. Look within: breath is going in, coming out. Watch the breath. As soon as you begin to watch the breath, you will be standing at that place, at that door from which meditation opens.
Begin to watch the breath—this breath has gone in. It is a very subtle thing; if you watch within carefully, it will begin to be seen. To be seen means it will begin to be felt: breath is going in, breath is coming out. If someone is not experiencing it, not feeling it, then take slightly deeper breaths so that the feeling becomes clear. Take the breath a little slower and deeper, and see, so that it becomes evident: here is the breath—this breath is going in, the breath is coming out; breath is going in, breath is coming out.
Watch—feel within—breath is going in, breath is coming out. Take it a little deeper, so that it comes clearly into awareness. Take slightly deeper breaths. For about ten minutes keep taking deeper breaths and keep watching—breath is going in, breath is going out. Let only this one work remain in attention: that I am watching the breath; I will not let the breath go in unobserved, nor let it go out unobserved. I will keep knowing, recognizing, watching the breath. By watching the breath, the mind will begin to grow silent. For about ten minutes, keep watching the breath. I become silent....
Breathe deeply... When the breath goes in, feel that it is going in; when the breath goes out, feel that it is going out. Let only the breath remain. You remain like a witness who is watching the coming and going of the breath. Watching—breath coming in, breath going out; breath coming in, breath going out. Just keep watching, keep watching, keep watching—and the mind will go on becoming quiet... becoming quiet... becoming quiet....
I shall be silent for ten minutes. Keep watching the breath. If in the meantime anyone feels like lying down, lie down quietly. If the body begins to tremble, do not stop it—let it tremble. If tears begin to flow from the eyes, do not stop them—let them flow. Whatever is happening, let it happen. And you do only one thing: keep watching the breath. Then, after ten minutes, I will give the second instruction. For ten minutes now, become absorbed in watching the breath—this breath is coming, this breath is going; I am only, like a witness, watching the breath.
